The Republic of Yemen has significant potential for renewable energy from solar and wind. Solar radiation varies from 1800-2400 kWh/m2/a and average wind speeds are 4.5-6.5 m/s. Currently, conventional energy sources like oil and gas account for 70% of government revenues. Yemen has plans to develop 400MW of wind and 160MW of geothermal energy by 2025 through projects like the AL-Mokha 60MW wind farm. However, renewable energy development faces barriers like a lack of policy and technical frameworks, expertise, resource data, and high financial risks.
