ShelterBox responds to Haiti immediately

14 January, 2010

A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is currently being mobilised with two SRT members from the
USA and one from the UK leading the response.

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean island of Haiti at close to 2200 GMT on
Tuesday, January 12. Initial reports state that hundreds of people are feared dead while
thousands of people have been left homeless.

ShelterBox UK General Manager Lasse Petersen said: ‘We’re doing everything we can to ensure
immediate aid reaches the people of Haiti. The process of getting our team on the ground is well
under way.

‘We were in Haiti eighteen months ago, delivering aid after a series of hurricanes left thousands
homeless. We’ll now be working closely with our contacts on the ground in the country to make
sure we get aid to the people who need it most during the current crisis. Our thoughts go out to
the people who have been affected by this disaster.’

The earthquake, described as the worst to hit Haiti in centuries, was centered 10 miles to the
south west of the islands capital, Port-au-Prince. The initial earthquake was followed by two
aftershocks measuring 5.9 and 5.5 in magnitude.

Many buildings have been devastated including the HQ of the UN mission and the Presidential
Palace.

ShelterBox SRTs and Boxes in the air

15 January, 2010

Tens of thousands dead, even more left homeless and scenes of chaos; this is the picture coming
out of the Caribbean island of Haiti.

The catastrophe continues to unfold and international disaster relief charity ShelterBox are
working round the clock to ensure emergency shelter reaches the island as quickly as possible.
Reports from Haiti say thousands of people have been sleeping in the open air for the second
night running, with some people even being forced to sleep among dead bodies.

With such a pressing need for emergency shelter provision, ShelterBox is dispatching 700
ShelterBoxes with even more to be packed before the end of the week. ShelterBox is using all of
the resources available to make sure immediate aid reaches Haiti. Boxes are being shipped direct
from ShelterBox HQ, from prepositioned stock in Curacao and from El Salvador.

A three-person ShelterBox Response Team comprised of highly-experienced members David Eby
(US), Wayne Robinson (US) and Mark Pearson (UK) are doing all they can to make it to Haiti as
quickly as possible. Alongside this, the dedicated team of volunteers at ShelterBox HQ in the UK
are giving up their time to help pack the ShelterBoxes ready for transportation.

ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘Our team around the world are doing all they can to
ensure aid reaches the people of Haiti as soon as possible. With each day the need grows and
we’re doing all we can to get help to the thousands of families affected by this tragedy.
‘The response from our volunteers and supporters has once again been sensational. We can’t do
this without the public’s compassion and generosity.’

  • 5. News Update 15 January, 2010 A project in Australia of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills ShelterBox responds to Haiti immediately 14 January, 2010 A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is currently being mobilised with two SRT members from the USA and one from the UK leading the response. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean island of Haiti at close to 2200 GMT on Tuesday, January 12. Initial reports state that hundreds of people are feared dead while thousands of people have been left homeless. ShelterBox UK General Manager Lasse Petersen said: ‘We’re doing everything we can to ensure immediate aid reaches the people of Haiti. The process of getting our team on the ground is well under way. ‘We were in Haiti eighteen months ago, delivering aid after a series of hurricanes left thousands homeless. We’ll now be working closely with our contacts on the ground in the country to make sure we get aid to the people who need it most during the current crisis. Our thoughts go out to the people who have been affected by this disaster.’ The earthquake, described as the worst to hit Haiti in centuries, was centered 10 miles to the south west of the islands capital, Port-au-Prince. The initial earthquake was followed by two aftershocks measuring 5.9 and 5.5 in magnitude. Many buildings have been devastated including the HQ of the UN mission and the Presidential Palace. ! 1300 881 913 " 0419 135 635 # info@shelterboxaustralia.org.au $ shelterboxaustralia.org.au
  • 6. ShelterBox SRTs and Boxes in the air 15 January, 2010 Tens of thousands dead, even more left homeless and scenes of chaos; this is the picture coming out of the Caribbean island of Haiti. The catastrophe continues to unfold and international disaster relief charity ShelterBox are working round the clock to ensure emergency shelter reaches the island as quickly as possible. Reports from Haiti say thousands of people have been sleeping in the open air for the second night running, with some people even being forced to sleep among dead bodies. With such a pressing need for emergency shelter provision, ShelterBox is dispatching 700 ShelterBoxes with even more to be packed before the end of the week. ShelterBox is using all of the resources available to make sure immediate aid reaches Haiti. Boxes are being shipped direct from ShelterBox HQ, from prepositioned stock in Curacao and from El Salvador. A three-person ShelterBox Response Team comprised of highly-experienced members David Eby (US), Wayne Robinson (US) and Mark Pearson (UK) are doing all they can to make it to Haiti as quickly as possible. Alongside this, the dedicated team of volunteers at ShelterBox HQ in the UK are giving up their time to help pack the ShelterBoxes ready for transportation. ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘Our team around the world are doing all they can to ensure aid reaches the people of Haiti as soon as possible. With each day the need grows and we’re doing all we can to get help to the thousands of families affected by this tragedy. ‘The response from our volunteers and supporters has once again been sensational. We can’t do this without the public’s compassion and generosity.’ ! 1300 881 913 " 0419 135 635 # info@shelterboxaustralia.org.au $ shelterboxaustralia.org.au
