1. The SAFECYCLE project
Introduction to the SAFECYCLE project
June 2011
SAFECYCLE, June 2011 SAFECYCLE is funded by EC – DG MOVE
2. Key facts about SAFECYCLE
■ Start: 1 June 2011
■ End: 30 November 2012
■ Co-funded by the European Commission – DG MOVE
■ Partners: Mobycon, University of Hasselt, University of
Rome, CDV
■ Objective: Identifying those ICT applications with the best
cost-effectiveness concerning road safety for cyclists
SAFECYCLE, June 2011 SAFECYCLE is funded by EC – DG MOVE 2
3. Some facts about cycle safety
■ Cyclist fatalities reach 6% of all the fatalities in EU
countries. In 2005 this amounts to approx. 1200 people for
the EU-14.
■ Apart from general factors (e.g. speed and weight of
motorised vehicles, lack of protection of cyclists) the
main factors for accidents of cyclists are lack of visibility,
vehicle control and alcohol consumption.
■ In countries where people cycle a lot, cyclists in general
have a lower fatality rate.
SAFECYCLE, June 2011 SAFECYCLE is funded by EC – DG MOVE 3
4. Goals Safecycle
■ To identify e-safety applications that will enhance the
safety of cyclists
● Reduced chance on accidents
● Reduced impact of accidents
■ To create knowledge and awareness concerning e-
safety applications for cycling
■ To speed up the adoption of e-safety applications in
cycling

6. Activities in the project
■ State of the art overview of e-safety applications for
cyclists
■ Identify useful e-safety applications and services, based
on SWOT analysis
■ Impact assessment of e-safety applications
■ SAFECYCLE platform for communicating results,
awareness and match making between relevant parties
SAFECYCLE, June 2011 SAFECYCLE is funded by EC – DG MOVE 6
7. Expected impacts
■ Improved safety, efficiency and competitiveness of
transport systems
■ Optimized mobility of people in urban environments
■ Improved quality of life in urban environments
■ A wider uptake of intelligent vehicle systems and co-
operative systems
■ Increased European research excellence
SAFECYCLE, June 2011 SAFECYCLE is funded by EC – DG MOVE 7
8. ICT dimensions
Four dimensions for ICT and safe cycling:
■ ICT on bicycles
■ ICT in other vehicles
■ ICT in infrastructure
■ ICT on the internet
SAFECYCLE, June 2011 SAFECYCLE is funded by EC – DG MOVE 8
9. European dimension
■ White paper (2011): ”By 2050, move close to zero
fatalities in road transport. In line with this goal, the EU
aims at halving road casualties by 2020. Make sure that
the EU is a world leader in safety and security of transport
in all modes of transport.”
■ Bringing together ICT knowledge and cycling knowledge
of European countries
■ SAFECYCLE consortium encompasses four European
countries with a worldwide cycling and ICT network
