According to the U.S. Department of Education, bullying can be physical,
Verbal, emotional, and sexual. Things have only gotten worse since
The internet has become so popular. Kids are now being bullied online.
The U.S. Department of Education reports that out of Midwestern Junior
High and High School students, 88% have said they have seen bullying.
Three Fourths of teens had indicated that they have been bullied while
At school. Also surveyed were a group of 4th to 6th grade students in the
South. The reported that a fourth were bullied on a regular basis, and
Around 10% were bullied once week.

4. In her article, Larson gives some helpful tips
when dealing with bullies.
• Listen to them.
• Let them know they are not alone in their struggle.
• Be compassionate, supportive, and strong.
• You must also Get immediate help from an adult.
• Report bullying to school personnel.
• Offer support to victim of bullying.
• Offer words of kindness or condolence.
• Don't feed the fire by joining in mean laughter, teasing or
gossip
• Ask the bully to quot;chillquot;

5. Larson’s articles, I thought, was very useful and helpful when trying learn about
bullying. She gave helpful tips on encounters with bullies, and how to react to
them correctly. She also gave us information on why there are so many bullies in
today’s school.
One thing I noticed in this articles is the fact that 88% of students that were surveyed
said they have witnessed bullying. I couldn’t believe the percentage was so high.
Another thing that caught my attention was when Larson’s explained why many
people chose to be a bully. Her reason was that is a way for many students to try
and fit in.
The last piece in the article I found interesting yet disturbing at the same time is that a
survey done showed that 10 percent of students that wee victims of bullying, were
being bullied on a weekly basis.
A quote in Larson’s article that stuck out the most to me was “No one should have to
endure being teased, bullied, or abused. Cruelty violates a person's sense of
self and others.” This quote stuck out to me because it is so true. Cruelty to
others isn’t just hurting them but it’s hurting everyone. We need to all come
together and fix this problem before it becomes unfixable.

6. Summary
In this article, a study was done on teachers’ perception on
three types of bullying, (physical, verbal, and social
exclusion). Participants were 94 teachers that were enrolled
in graduate classes at a U.S. State University. This survey was
done to find out the different approaches and strategies
teachers use when dealing with bullying. Results showed that
teachers have different attitudes and intervention strategies
depending on what type of bullying is occurring.
Since aggression and bullying have become so popular in
today’s society, its hard to know how to react. Dealing with
bullying takes up a lot of the teachers time away from actual
school work and teaching (Kerber, Karen).

7. Programs have been designed now for teachers to take part in
to learn how to prevent and react to such bullying behavior.
It is important for teachers to learn these strategies because
teachers are one of the main roles in keeping a positive
classroom running (Kerber, Karen).

8. This article shed light on how important it is for teachers and future teachers to be
trained and ready to face a issue such as bullying. It’s understandable that many
people would react wrong when being faced with this issue. So the best way to
try and fix it is to educate people on the problem at hand.
The first thing that stuck out to me in this article is the three different type of bullying.
There is, physical, verbal, and social exclusion. Many people wouldn’t know that
social exclusion was a form of bullying which is why I was caught of guard.
The second thing I found interesting in the article was the statistic that 85% of teachers
reported intervening whenever they see bullying, and only 35% of students say the
teacher intervenes. The cause in this difference can be because of many
different factors. We need to figure them out though so we can all begin to
recognize bullying and getting the problem fixed.
The last thing that sticks in my head from this article is that there are indirect and direct
bullying. Indirect bullying comes in the form of social exclusion and direct bullying
is in the form of verbal in physical. The reason for the difference is because in
indirect, the victims social status and other people thoughts are being changed
rather than in direct bullying, the attacks are being put directly on the victim.
A quote I found most interesting in this article is “Classroom teachers face
challenges to deal with a perpetrator and a victim, which means less time
devoted to class work and instruction.’ I found this quote interesting because
I never looked at it like that. The issue of bullying isn’t only hurting the victim
but also everyone else who is losing time from the teacher to be able to
learn.

9. Summary
In this article, Dombeck talks about his own personal
account of bullying and how it has effected his life
ever since.
Some facts about long term effects of bullying is that is
can cause lasting damage to many of its victims.
One negative long lasting outcome that often comes
from victims of bullying is their feelings of
depression, bitterness, and anger.
The second outcome that often comes from bullying Is
the victim’s wounded self concept. It makes it harder
for the victim to believe in himself therefore, often
causing it to be much harder to make through
difficult life circumstances and challenges.

10. In Dombeck’s article, he makes a list of the short term and long term effects victims of bullying often
have.
Short Term
• Anger
• Depression
• Anxious avoidance of settings in which bullying may occur.
• Greater incidence of illness
• Lower grades than non-bullied peers
• Suicidal thoughts and feelings
Long Term
• Reduced occupational opportunities
• Lingering feelings of anger and bitterness, desire for revenge
• Difficulty trusting people
• Interpersonal difficulties, including fear and avoidance of new social situations
• Increased tendency to be a loner
• Perception of self as easy to victimize, overly sensitive, and thin-skinned
• Self-esteem problems (don't think well of self)
• Increased incidence of continued bullying and victimization

11. I liked this article because the author shares his own experience with
the readers and how it has effected him.
My first “a-ha” moment in this article was that Dombeck points out
that you can be emotionally harmed even when your being
physically harmed.
Another part I liked in this article was when I read the short term
effects and saw that one was greater incidence of illness, which
made me wonder if it was just to stay away from the bully.
The last thing that stuck out in the article was when I read that 20%
of attempted suicide victims have been a victim of bullying
before.
A quotation I found interesting in this article was “I'm 40 years old
now; it's been something like 30 years since that sort of thing last
happened. Still, the experience has not left me, it sucked so
much.” This quote stuck out to me because he tells us through
his own experience that bullying causes a lifelong effect in the
victims. It had been 30 years since Dombeck was bullied but still
he can tell the story like it was yesterday.

12. After reading and researching the issue of bullying in schools, I have
come up with the conclusion that the issue isn’t only a problem
and set back for the victim, but also a problem for everyone.
Yes, its safe to say that the people who fall victim to the act of
bullying will me damaged psychologically for the rest of their
lives. But, not only are they the ones who are being negatively
affected. The rest of the students will also be hurt by the neglect
from the teachers who are trying to intervene and prevent this
kind of behavior. For this to stop in our schools, our
teachers, parents and students all need to ban together and
find effective ways to prevent such a thing to happen.
Programs have been set up for teachers to help educate them
on productive and useful ways to keep this out of our
schools, but it’s not only up to the teachers to be successful in
the prevention. The parents and peers of the bullies, and the
victims of the bullies also need to be educated and informed of
this problem.
