2. CHAPTER 18: COLLECTIVE ACTION,
SOCIAL MOVEMENT,
AND SOCIAL CHANGE
• Collective action is a collaborative effort that takes
place in groups and diverges from the social norms
of the situation.

10. COLLECTIVE ACTION:
WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?
• Crowd collective action takes place when
members of a group are face to face.
• Mass collective action is collective action in
which close physical proximity is not necessary,
such as a letter-writing campaign.
11. THEORIES OF COLLECTIVE
ACTION
• According to convergence theoryconvergence theory, collective
action happens when people with similar ideas
and tendencies gather in the same place.
This theory does not explain the inconsistency of group action: why collective action
sometimes happens under such circumstances and why it sometimes does not.
12. THEORIES OF COLLECTIVE
ACTION
• According to contagion theory, collective action arises
because of people’s tendency to conform to the
behavior of others.
This theory downplays individual agency and does not explain the inconsistency of group action.
13. THEORIES OF COLLECTIVE ACTION
• Emergent norm theory emphasizes the influence of
leaders in promoting particular norms that members of
a group then follow.
This theory doesn’t explain why particular people become leaders or
why some actions emerge as norms within a group and others don’t.

BE SPECIFIC- WHAT CHANGES? HOW?

15. IDENTITY
• In order to explain who we are as individuals, we tend
to talk about different groups we are in. What makes
each of us unique is the particular combination of
groups with which we identify.

One of the best things about sociology is that inherently, it gives us the insights to work toward collective action, since we are more aware of the issues of the society we live in!

Either kind of collective action draws attention to a cause and works to bring about social change.
It is important to note, however, that this theory does not explain the inconsistency of group action: why collective action sometimes happens under such circumstances and why it sometimes does not.
This theory downplays individual agency and does not explain the inconsistency of group action.
This theory doesn’t explain why particular people become leaders or why some actions emerge as norms within a group and others don’t.
Most people are members of several groups: the family they come from, the family they create, their friends, student groups, religious groups, and so on.
