Notas do Editor

  1. Looking in newspaper want ads – by that time the jobs are stale or thousands apply. Relying on word of mouth is not enough you know a lot of people. Just asking or telling your friends and family is not a good way to network into a job either. These types of methods worked in the 70’s and 80’s but won’t work now.
  2. Old fashioned ideas like – grocery store bulletin boards, coffee shop boards, newspapers, going after the same old job you had before or being passive! You don’t want to be caught in the jet stream of someone else who is flying ahead of you and getting to the jobs faster. You need to have a modern 21st century strategy.
  3. Create a strategy – by setting goals, time when you want to accomplish things, how much you can do, who your audience is for the sale of your skills, use of or ignoring recruiters, etc. The whole point of setting creating a strategy is to get you working faster. You want to STAND OUT in a crowd. Be careful when relying solely on recruiters, sourcers, and talent scouts as they not be working in your best interest. They may also end up changing your resume without your knowledge. Be forewarned. You need to be your own best advocate and do a proactive job / career hunt.
  4. What do you REALLY want to do? Are there any financial constraints? Part-time, Full-Time, Consulting, Entrepreneurship. SME as a jack of all trades or little cog in a big machine. If you FAIL to plan then you PLAN to fail. Make your “Top 10 List” – companies, personnel, size of company, type of market. Create your SMART strategy – specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely.
  5. It is important to stay up-to-the minute in the fast changing, social media obsessed world of today. These are methods that can help and enhance these technologies delivering what you need in a timely fashion.
  6. What are you goals in the meetups? Do you have a set agenda, are you going to ask about a job or just wing it. Will these be formal meetings one-on-one or with others? Is coffee enough to ply someone? Will you be picking the brain of the people in the meeting, selling your skills or asking for a job? How do you plan, even the unplanned, meetups?
  7. Networking is an art and needs to be practiced all the time. It is NOT just collecting contacts on LinkedIn but strategically and carefully choosing how and with whom you will connect and for what purpose. There are many places to network besides organized groups that can be found via Peter’s New Jobs. Join professional orgs in your field and use social media to YOUR advantage, not just as a way of saying hi to an old school chum.
  8. Professional organizations like – certified general accountants, PEO, legal assistants. Alumni and community meetings like – Experica alumni or the Kanata Kareer Group. Webinars where you can hear, learn and connect.
  9. Hidden job market is like an ice berg – 20 % posted (above the water) and 80 % hidden below the surface. There are lots of social media tools on the market to choose from and you don’t need them all. You can set alerts with social media to remind you of events or even send job postings. Blogs are a great way to set yourself apart as a subject matter expert and to get noticed by commenting on other people’s blog you can land a job.
  10. Communications, business reviews, friendship, multi-media, networking, business links, instant messaging, micro blogging, blogs, monitoring. Top six tools for job seekers are: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Visual CV, and YouTube.
  11. If you thought that the resume was your ONLY marketing tool, you are wrong. There is a lot that you can do to get yourself noticed and these tools have to become a staple in your marketing arsenal. Try putting more than just your resume online by using Visual CV. Create and practice the Elevator Pitch. It helps you perfect your sales technique and define your profile / value / worth. You could create a marketing letter that highlights all of your accomplishments. This is used when selling the concept of you rather than for the application to a specific job. The marketing letter and attitude is all part of Guerrilla Marketing where you target your audience.
  12. You need to tailor your resume for each job. That means putting in key words, adjusting your accomplishments, creating a clear and professional profile and taking out all of the personal extras. If you have gaps in your resume or more than one type of job, then a combined is better than a chronological resume. Functional shows the transferrable skills and highlights more of your accomplishments. The Career Solo or Guerrilla Marketing Resume is used to highlight specific attributes that were used in previous employment situations and can be sold to a new, prospective employer. Just don’t get too fancy.
  13. A lot of people ONLY look on job boards, or recruiting agency websites. This can be a trap and frequently leads to frustration, becoming overwhelmed at NOT seeing anything. When one applies to a job on a company website, the resume or application seems to disappear into the big black hole. The applicant can drop into despair when they do not hear back from the company. Relying on only this method of job search can be very dangerous, especially if you post your resume to Monster or Workopolis as you risk getting spammed.
  14. If you want to be found, then you need to build an online reputation. Prospective employers search Google for candidates by name (from resumes to view the applicant and by profile or brand. You want to make sure that you rise to the top of the Google list by creating value, filling in a complete LinkedIn profile, analyzing situations where you can become known. Comment on blogs, ask questions of discussion groups on LI or perhaps set yourself up as a Subject Matter Expert. Use Twitter and LI to build your brand. Your brand is your promise of what you can do and how you can do it to make an employers life easier. You can build this by using social media and building your online rep.
  15. Coaching provides you with the second voice that helps to clarify the direction that you are going in. Coaching helps to bring out the positional in people who have lost sight of the goals. A good coach can help with the balance of life, work, and the job search. Coaching is used to solidify the profile of what you can do and who you are. Coaches help you build your brand. Your brand is your promise of what you can do to solve problems for an employer. Taking courses can help to identify your skills set, your aptitude and on how coaching can help will move you one step closer to going from wearing pajamas at home to the employed world of suits and employed.
  16. Using a coach can help you get to the jobs faster, build your network and your net worth. Coaching helps to move your forward and gives you mini attainable goals to prove your ability to do the work. When you are out of work for more that a year, you become demoralized and begin to not focus on what is really important. When you lose site of your targets, your spirits drop and you lose your focus. Career coaching is all about helping you to maintain your forward momentum and keeps you focused on the prize ahead. Coaching helps you develop clarity and see an achievable goal. The focus then becomes creating a realistic strategy to move forward with a time frame that is manageable. The ultimate goal is to attain gainful employment based on one’s brand and profile.
  17. Have a realistic strategic plan – make your top 10 list – companies, CEO’s or personnel, company culture, size, products or services, customers. Keep in mind your time frame – can’t send out 25 resumes a week. Seek out help – from a coach and someone who can guide you. Use social media to get noticed and get ahead – like LinkedIn and Twitter. Create an online footprint so you can be found. Network all the time and practice you Elevator Pitch because you just never know when you might just bump into that hiring manager. The ultimate goal is to climb the ladder of success.
