SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: Thomas Gamble; Director, Development, Home Depot Your team is excited about getting started with Spring Boot and Cloud Native, but you're not entirely sure you're ready to have the team continuously delivering to prod using cf push from their local desktops. The freedom of cloud native development can be very empowering for developers, but it shouldn't be something that terrifies the operations and security teams. We'll discuss how you can setup a fast and reliable deployment process, as well as some interesting things to thing about in the future. One of the most well known descriptions of these new paradigms is the Twelve Factor App (12factor.net), which describes elements of cloud native applications. Many of these needs are squarely met through the Spring Framework, others require support from other systems. In this session we will examine each of the twelve factors and present how Spring, and platforms such as Cloud Foundry satisfy them, and in some cases we’ll even suggest that responsibility should shift from Spring to platforms. At the conclusion you will understand what is needed for cloud‐native applications, why and how to deliver on those requirements.

OSGi DevCon 2008 OSGi started out as a technology for building software for embedded devices however it's applicability goes far wider than this as demonstrated by the activities in the OSGi Expert Enterprise Group over the last 18 months. This talk will review some of the challenges and benefits of taking OSGi out of the device, off of the desktop and into enterprise scale deployments. There will be a review of the problem domain; discussion of applicable patterns; and references to a real world implementation. The talk will be technical in nature with code samples and attendees should ideally have a basic understanding of OSGi.

SpringOne Platform 2016 Speakers: Craig Walls; Spring Social Lead, Pivotal. Roy Clarkson; Spring Mobile Lead, Pivotal. Developing cloud native applications presents several challenges. How do microservices discover each other? How do you configure them? How can you make them resilient to failure? How can you monitor the health of each microservice? Spring Cloud addresses all of these concerns. Even so, you still must explicitly develop your own discovery server, configuration server, and circuit breaker dashboard for monitoring the circuit breakers in each microservice. Spring Cloud Services for Pivotal Cloud Foundry picks up where Spring Cloud leaves off, offering a discovery server, configuration server, and Hystrix dashboard as services that can be bound to applications deployed in Pivotal Cloud Foundry, leaving you to focus on developing the services that drive your application. In this talk, we will introduce the capabilities provided by Spring Cloud Services and demonstrate how it makes simple work of deploying cloud native applications to Cloud Foundry.

Software development should not be a “black box” to the business, customers or other developers. Instead collaboration across stakeholders should be the norm--business, development and operations teams. Forrester recently reported that 13% of organizations doing Agile link “upstream” agile planning with ‘“downstream” development. As a result, executives continue to have only limited or no visibility beyond the initial planning stage of what is in a particular release. It’s not their fault, because today’s tools focus on upfront planning and don’t give you visibility into what’s happening in development. Often times that visibility is too late resulting in software that gets delivered and does not meet the customer’s needs. Join CollabNet’s most experienced senior solution architects as they explain how you can you gain real time visibility into all stages of the development process—from ideation into production through deployment. Imagine what can your teams get done if all stakeholders are able to collaborate together and view real time feeds into all stages of the delivery pipelines within a single easy-to-use system. Who Should attend: Any executive or manager interested in learning how to get traceability and visibility across the enterprise-- particularly, into the build and release management functions of their application lifecycle. What will be covered: An enterprise-scalable reference architecture for CI, CD, and DevOps The importance of build management, release management and application release automation integration A blueprint for scaling business agility across a large development organization How does CollabNet help organizations solve these problems A demonstration of TeamForge’s capabilities using Git/Gerrit, Code Review, Jenkins, Nexus, Artifactory, Chef and Automic

SpringOne Platform 2017 Jennifer Strater, Zenjob "RESTful APIs are eating the world, yet all too often the documentation can cause indigestion for the APIs' developers and their users. Developers have to deal with annotation overload, repetition, and an unpleasant writing environment. Users are then left with documentation that's inaccurate and difficult to use. It doesn't have to be this way. This talk will introduce Spring REST Docs and its test-driven approach to RESTful API documentation. We'll look at how it combines the power of Asciidoctor and your integration tests to produce documentation that's accurate and easy-to-read, while keeping your code DRY and free from annotation overload. We'll look at features that are new in Spring REST Docs, focusing on support for documenting APIs that have been implemented using Spring Framework 5's WebFlux."

Microservice platforms are finally becoming a reality: Mesos, Kubernetes, and a whole bunch of PaaS-style offerings are available, but the reality is that these platforms still don’t provide everything you need in order to build a fully functional microservice ecosystem. Come to this session to learn about the essential deployment, orchestration, and glue components that often have to be self-assembled. The presentation begins by looking at deployment techniques and tools and examines where to test (QA, staging, or production), how to test (integration and contracts), and how to separate deployment and release. It then discusses orchestration, configuration, and service discovery. Finally it looks at essential glue such as logging, monitoring, and alerting.

Java SE is ideal for building lightweight microservices and those services are increasingly being deployed to the cloud. Cloud platforms are attractive deployment targets due to their high availability, affordability, ease of management, and access to services like object storage, messaging, and databases. And when well architected, Cloud Java apps exhibit a number of qualities like portability, updatability, configurability, composability, and scalability.

In a world where majority of the population is not actively connected to the Internet, how usable are the regular web applications? What are the technologies which would help us develop apps to include all these users? To answer this need and also to bring about a great user experience, we have Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) emerging. The talk would cover what gaps in the traditional web apps and native apps led to the emergence of PWAs. What are PWAs and the underlying technologies for making a web app progressive. It also covers what are the challenges involved in developing PWAs.

Businesses are speeding up development and automating operations to remain competitive and to get large organizations to scale. Project based monolithic application updates are replaced by product teams owning containerized microservices. This puts developers on call, responsible for pushing code to production, fixing it when it breaks, and managing the cost and security aspects of running their microservices. In this world operations skill-sets are either embedded in the microservices development teams, or building and operating API driven platforms. The platform automates stress testing, canary based deployment, penetration testing and enforces availability and security requirements. There are no meetings or tickets to file in the delivery process for updating a containerized microservice, which can happen many times a day, and takes seconds to complete. The role of site reliability engineering moves from firefighting and fixing outages to buiding tools for finding problems and routing those problems to the right developers. SREs manage the incident lifecycle for customer visible problems, and measure and publish availability metrics. This may sound futuristic but Werner Vogels described this as “You build it, you run it” in 2006.

Oracle WebLogic Server 12.2.1 (WLS) is the most significant release of WLS since Oracle added WLS to its product portfolio with the acquisition of BEA in 2008. This session by WebLogic developer and JCP Specification Lead Ed Burns goes behind the buzzwords and explains the enterprise value-add brought by WLS 12.2.1 in plain English. Ed infuses his decades long experience in web technologies throughout the presentation, addressing such topics as why app servers are still useful, what role standards play in transitioning to the cloud, and what is the difference between "full stack" and "monolith". See an interview about this topic at <https: />. Ed introduces the new version of WLS by taking a tour of two big ticket new features: multitenancy and Java EE 7. Other features such as continuous availability, REST management, and Docker/devops features will also be included. The multitenancy features in WebLogic Server offer extreme efficiency, full isolation, application portability, and full automation, all in an easy to adopt format. Java EE 7 is the latest version of the Java standard full stack of loosely coupled, highly cohesive technologies for building enterprise software. EE 7 features new versions of popular standards such as JAX-RS (REST), CDI, Servlet, JSF, JSON, WebSocket, JMS, and more. WLS 12.2.1 delivers these and other new features, while continuing the promise of stability and scale developers expect.

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems. You can learn how handle your issue about standard libraries.
