- Welcome to the ICS-100 course hosted by the Public Works Group and MuniGov. This course will introduce you to the Incident Command System – sometimes designated by the acronym “ICS.” This course was prepared for the purpose of exploring the use of online and virtual worlds tools for training. Because this course is not officially approved by FEMA, taking this course will not meet your requirements for NIMS compliance. Before we continue, I will introduce myself: My name is Pam Broviak, and I will be your instructor for the course. My background is in public works where I have worked for the past 28 years. My current position is with the city of Geneva in Illinois where I serve as city engineer and assistant director of public works. Over the years I have taken several of the NIMS courses, participated in a few table top exercises, and experienced two flooding emergencies.
- The objective for this course is for participants to demonstrate basic knowledge of the Incident Command System (ICS). This course is designed to provide overall incident management skills rather than tactical expertise. Additional courses on developing and implementing incident tactics will be developed over time and are currently available on the FEMA Website.
- Because this course is held in a non-traditional format, you can participate in this activity by filling out your profile on Moodle. Please fill in as much suggested information as you feel comfortable sharing online.
- You can also add what you expect to gain from this course. You can also take the poll on the Moodle site or in Second Life.
- These expectations have been developed for a traditional training format. Although many apply here, this course is available on a 24/7 basis and can be taken on your own time at your own pace. You can always leave and come back to the course, and you only need participate to the level at which you feel comfortable.
- This course is divided into the following eight units: Unit 1: Course Overview Unit 2: ICS Overview Unit 3: Basic Features of ICS Unit 4: Incident Commander & Command Staff Functions Unit 5: General Staff Functions Unit 6: ICS Facilities Unit 7: Common Responsibilities Unit 8: Course Summary
- Again, most of these items only apply to a traditional training format. Instead here are the points to remember for Moodle: you have accessed this site by registering as a student. Your grades and activities will be saved and available for your review at any time. No one else except the instructor can see your progress. The facilities in Second Life are available for free to anyone who creates a Second Life account and visits the training area on Public Works island. While in Second Life you are free to wander anywhere on the island and use any of the facilities. Please conduct yourself in the virtual world as you would in any other classroom setting by respecting others.
- Again, this course is not available for actual credit for NIMS compliance. Therefore the requirements stated here are not necessary to achieve an official certificate of completion. However, you can still take a practice exam and complete a course evaluation. And there may be special, virtual items you can acquire by completing the course in Second Life.
