3. Carl Gustav Jung
Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who
founded analytical psychology.
Analytical Psychology focuses on the individual
psyche and the pursuit of wholeness
Terms coined: extroversion and
introversion, archetypes, modern dream analysis,
and the collective unconscious.
4. The Jungian
Model of the
Psyche
➢Jung believed that the psyche is
a self-regulating system, rather
like the body, one that seeks to
maintain a balance between
opposing qualities while
constantly striving for growth,
a process Jung called
“individuation”.
5. The Parts of The
Psyche
Ego represents the conscious mind. The HQ for linking our
inner and outer worlds together, forming how we relate to
that which is external to us.
The Personal Unconscious arises from the interaction
between the collective unconscious and one’s personal
growth.
The Collective Unconscious:all the elements of an
individual’s nature are present from birth, and that the
environment of the person brings them out (rather than the
environment creating them). Jung felt that people are born
with a “blueprint” already in them that will determine the
course of their lives.
6. Jungian
Archetypes
➢Jung's definition of archetype is images,
patterns, and symbols that rise out of the
collective unconscious and appear in
dreams, mythology, and fairy tales.
➢Four major psyche archetypes;
shadows, persona, self and anima/animus.
➢Twelve traditional archetypes: Sage,
Innocent, Explorer, Ruler, Creator, Caregiver,
Magician, Hero, Outlaw, Lover, Jester, and
Regular Person.
7. Persona & Shadow
➢Persona (Mask) is an element of the
personality which arises “for reasons of
adaptation or personal convenience.”
➢Everyone puts on persona when they go to
work, hang with friends, or at home by
themselves.
➢The persona usually grows from the parts of
people that wished to please authority
figures, and embodiesonly one’s best
qualities, leaving those negative traits to
form the “Shadow”.
➢Shadow is formed by the traits we tend to
ignore and dislike.
➢ Jung felt that “where there is light, there
must also be shadow” The shadow helps with
balancing consciousness.
➢Without a well-developedshadow side, a
person can easily become shallow and
extremely preoccupied with the opinions of
others.
8. Anima/Animus & The Self
➢Anima/Animus is the masculine and
feminine parts of the psyche, with the
anima being in a man and animus in a
woman.
➢These archetypes tend to wind up
being projected, only in a more
idealized form; one looks for the
reflection of one’s anima or animus in
a potential partner.
➢Jung's definition says the self is the
sum of the psyche.
➢It's also an archetype that represents
the unified unconsciousness and
consciousness of an individual.
➢The ego makes up the center of
consciousness, but it is the self that lies
at the center of personality
10. What is Persona?
Japanese RPG turn based video game
Each installment in the Persona franchise follows a high school
student who is given the power of "Persona"
11. The power of
"Persona"
➢The Protagonist activates their
"persona" through different
methods (crushing tarot card,
pulling off a mask, or shooting
themselves (I know this one is
graphic) ).
➢This power is used against
shadows.
12. Shadows
➢Shadows are born from
human's negative thoughts
and are the monsters the
persona users battle.
➢The more negative emotions
there are in an area will
attract lesser shadows and
create a powerful shadow.
(Ex. In the top gif)
13. Dimensions: The Dark
Hour, Midnight Channel,
and Palaces/Mementos
➢The Dark Hour, Midnight Channel, and Mementos
are the dimensions which represents negative
emotions in a certain area and where the persona
users battle shadows.
➢Palace is only in Persona 5 and is unique to only
one individual.
Persona 3: The
Dark Hour
Persona 4: Midnight
Channel
Persona 5: Mementos
Persona 5: Palaces
15. Connection/ Persona
➢In the game, the term persona is desribed as a mask to face
against an enemy.
➢Jung describes Persona as a mask we use to put on when
interacting in social situations.
➢In Persona 5, Makoto, persona at school is an authority figure
because she is trying to meet her sister's high expectations to be
successful in life. She struggles with knowing what is right and wrong,
due to everyone telling what is and is not. However, the awakening
of her persona coincideswith her resolving to stop blindly doing as
she is told against her better judgement and follow her own morals.
16. Connection/ Shadow
"Shadows are the lower parts of the psyche everyone has...
Suppressed human thoughts given physical form. When people are
unable to face their darker selves, they break loose, free from all
control. But sometimes, humans with special awareness can tame
their Shadows... Those are Persona-users."
—Metis, Persona 3 FES: The Answer
➢In Persona 4, Kanji, the Protagonist's friend, represses his interests
in what are traditionally considered feminine pursuits to protect his
masculine self-image. This creates an overtly femmine shadow that
questions his sexuality. Kanji overcomes his shadow by finally
accepting that part of himself.
➢This is an accurate depiction of Jung's description of shadow.
17. Connection/ The
Collective Unconscious
Ø The Palaces represent the personal unconscious due to it being
personal to one individual. Palaces hold the individual's deepest
and rawest emotions. The Shadow builds on this.
Ø Mementos/Dark Hour/Midnight Channel are the collective
unconscious they also hold our shadows.
Ø Both are representations of Jung's ideas on the human psyche.
18. My Take
The creator of Shin Megumi
Tenshi (Persona) was clearly
influenced by Carl Jung's Ideas
when creating the franchise. I
think he does a good job
going off Jung's ideas, but he
does bend them.
Persona 4 contained an extra
feature in the main menu that
gave you the option of
listening to a series of lectures
on the psychological theories
from Jung.
