majority schools.
The teacher-student ratio is somewhat traumatizing.

  • 1. Language proficiency of Bengali Medium Students WELCOME TO OUR PRESENTATION
  • 2. Sector overview  Primary Education (2005Est.) Total student 17,462,961. Number of teachers 326,969.  Secondary education (2005 Est.) Total student 8,126,362. Total teacher: 206,577.  Higher secondary education: (2005 Est.) Total student: 1449229 Total teacher: 85,425.
  • 4. Education system in Bangladesh Two languages are being taught: Bengali(Native) and English (Secondary) There are insufficient number of trained teachers in majority schools. The teacher-student ratio is somewhat traumatizing. To what extent, are those students prepared to face the world? Isn’t the education system is biased within the country’s borders?
  • 5. Primary and secondary education Primary education  Big pool of students.  Insufficient teacher.  Space for dedicating time to language.  Focusing on the basic developmental courses: Language, drawing, Mainly arts. Secondary education  Many students don’t continue.  Insufficient teacher.  Too much focus on major subjects.  Lack of focus on language building skills.
  • 6. Higher Secondary Education and Tertiary Education Higher secondary Education  Majority students lag behind.  Deprivation of quality education.  90-95% of the study is focused towards major subjects. Tertiary Education  Very small pool of students.  Smaller amount of universities to allocate the students.  Sudden turning to multidimensional English Medium Education
  • 8. Primary Vs. Secondary Primary Education  4-5 Classes a week.  Students are more careful.  Tendency to develop memorization of books.  Lack of creativity and knowledge sharing Secondary Education  2-3 classes a week.  Students are more friendly on the copying of homework.  Developed practice of memorization of concepts.  A little emphasis on creativity and knowledge sharing
  • 9. Higher Secondary Vs Tertiary Higher Secondary Education 1-2 classes a week. Less emphasis on homework and more emphasis on class works. Intense practice of memorization. Extinction of creativity and knowledge sharing Tertiary education  Usually not much academic emphasis on language learning.  Fully dedicated English Medium.  Mixed and matched priorities of Home and Class works.  Sudden development on creativity and knowledge sharing.
  • 10. But the students who have gone through 12 years of practice in memorizing and faced the extinction of creativity and knowledge sharing, how can they survive in this environment?
