1. Activity 1: Literature Review & Preliminary Works
Study the various basic single-phase matrix converter
operation including its basic commutation strategies.
Review existing topologies in UPS to ascertain new and
novelty of proposed UPS
2. Activity 2: Simulation Models
Simulation Models will use MATLAB/Simulink, PSpice
and/or PSIM to study the behaviour and performance
implemented using a personal computer. Proposed
investigations and implementations on behaviour and
performance includes;

3. Activity 3: Construction of laboratory prototype
For experimental verifications, basic test equipments including;
volt-meter, ammeter, wattmeter together with basic DC supply for
controller will be used for testing and evaluation. A frequency
generator will be used to generate test waveforms. A special DC
supply (600V, 10A) will be used to provide the DC rail voltage for
inverter operation. Development systems for FPGA and
microcontroller will be used to implement the control electronics.
A dedicated personal computer is required to provide interface
between software control algorithm and hardware.
4. Activity 4: Hardware Construction & Experimental
Verification
The performance of the UPS will be evaluated for charging and
back-up operation

Mathematical treatment on the developed topology will be
outlined with the appropriate technical analysis of results.
