Clan- group of families related by blood or marriage
Yayoi buried their chiefs in large mounds
In about 5000B.C. these wandering groups began to
develop a culture.
Certainly the Japanese language is not related to
Chinese though China would be Japan’s greatest
cultural influence.
They relied on the sea for most food because there
was only 20% of farm.
6. Government
Feudal society included:
emperor, nobles, military
officials, merchants, traders, and farmers.
The emperor was the highest ranking of
medieval Japan society.
Japan’s wealth came from farmers.
Formed groups called guilds.
Japan’s wealth also came from increased trade
with Korea, China, and Southeast Asia.
7. Government cont.
Men headed the family and had total control
over all family members.
Marriages were arranged and women were
expected to accept it.
When Japan became a warrior society with
samurai and daimyo, upper-class women lost
their freedoms.
In farming families, women had more say in who
they married.
