Twitter Who?
Twitter is a phenomenon that is sweeping the globe. In the last year Twitter has
seen membership growth well in excess of 1,500% as people swarm to use it and
set up accounts.
The basic premise of Twitter is that you post Tweets about what you are doing.
The twist is that you only have 140 characters to post your information.
It’s not a lot and you really do need to think about what you are posting when
you Tweet. It really forces you to be concise and to think about what it is you are
writing about.
Effectively, Twitter is a social networking micro- blogging service. One of the
major components of Twitter is to follow people whose Tweets you are interested
in and to gather followers who are interested in your Tweets.
Therefore the onus is firmly on you to make sure that you are Tweeting
information that your potential followers would be interested in.
Internet Marketers have flocked to Twitter, much like they did to Facebook and
MySpace before. More and more marketers are using Twitter to communicate
with their customers.
4. However, use of Twitter is not just limited to marketers. The rich and famous are
jumping on the Twitter bandwagon and no you are not considered an A list
celebrity unless you have your own Twitter page.
Because Twitter is more of a broadcast medium than directly interacting with
people, it is ideal for celebrities to send out information about them, their
schedule and events to their fans.
Companies are also waking up to the value of Twitter because of this. The Los
Angeles Fire Department Tweets fire safety tips and information about local fire
emergencies.
There are a lot of uses to Twitter and used well it can really help you build your
business.
Whether you want to use Twitter to build a list, promote your product, for search
engine optimization or to establish yourself as an expert in a niche, you will find it
a very useful tool.
Though not a very complex website, Twitter can be difficult to use successfully.
Many marketers are trying to use it with their businesses but few are actually
earning from it. Those that aren’t are those that are denouncing Twitter as a
fraudulent, useless website.
The aim of this report is to give you some background information on Twitter and
some advice on how you can use it for maximum effect.
Effectively Using Twitter
Twitter can be a very powerful site, if it is used correctly.
Many marketers jump into Twitter and assume that they can make money from
Twitter just by showing up! This is the same mistake they made with Facebook
and MySpace when they were they “big thing”.
5. Unfortunately, earning money from Twitter, like earning money from anywhere
else takes some work to do. It requires you to put in some time and effort in
order to succeed, or pay someone to put in that time and effort on your behalf.
It is not difficult to use Twitter by any stretch of the imagination, but to use it
effectively and also efficiently is a bit more of an art form.
Firstly, you have to find yourself followers.
Followers are the Twitter equivalent of an email list. They are people who have
expressed an interest in you and your Tweets and want to find out more.
The above is the basic screen you get presented with when you log in to Twitter.
You can see it tells you how many people you are following and how many people
are following you.
There are a lot of services out there (discussed in the Twitter Marketing Secrets
program) which will add followers to your Twitter account.
But think about this. Would you rather have a list of 100,000 random people to
email or would you rather have a list of 5,000 highly targeted people?
The latter is not only much more preferable, but is much more profitable too.
You can use these services to build your followers, but the majority of them will
be people who are not relevant to your niche. You can find some services that
will add what they claim to the relevant followers, but even then some of the
connections are somewhat tenuous.
It is much better for you to manually add people to your Twitter account because
you can ensure they are targeted and interested. Typically whenever you follow
someone, they will follow you too, hence why you find people to follow.
If you are Tweeting useful information that is relevant to your niche and contains
keywords relating to your niche then you will be found by followers who are
searching for information and for people to follow. This again will ensure you
have some highly targeted followers, which are much easier for you to market to.
And let’s not forget finding followers outside of Twitter.
6. Undoubtedly you already have some websites that are getting some traffic. If
they are information sites or blogs, you can put a “follow me on Twitter” graphic
or link on it.
This will get your existing website traffic interested in you and following you on
Twitter.
Because Twitter is a direct broadcast medium rather than a more interactive
medium like Facebook, it is ideal for sending out product updates and other
information.
Many marketers and companies who are developing software and products find
that Twitter is a great way to keep existing and potential customers up to date
with their activities.
Tweeting
As you can see, Twitter is a powerful medium for communicating with your
customer base.
A lot of marketers really have no idea on what to Tweet. The difficulty being,
how much “noise” do you make and how much proper information do you
provide?
The ratio that seems to work for most marketers is, not surprisingly, 80/20. 80%
of your Tweets are useful information, promotions and so on whilst 20% are just
about you and your life.
This works well because you end up building a personality and becoming a real
person in the eyes of your followers.
Don’t just Tweet junk like “Gone for coffee” but make posts that build a character
and make you look good, e.g. “Going to Disneyland with the kids today –
woohoo” or something.
People like to buy from real people and in our Internet focused age, we forget
that we are dealing with real people in our hurry to market to them.
Interacting with your followers on a personal level and being a real person will
help them to understand you and help them to buy from you. They are more
likely to click on the link from someone they think of as a “friend” then they are
from some faceless marketer who sends them link after link after link.
7. Where you need to, include links in your Tweets as well, but don’t always include
them.
Because you have such a small number of characters to make a post, you are
going to have to post a few Tweets building up to a link, then post the link and
then post a few more and then the link again.
You must remember that if people have a lot of followers then they are going to
have a lot of Tweets to go through and they may well miss yours.
It does seem that Twitter “rewards” those who make a lot of noise, but you will
find that posting your URL’s and information rewritten in different words a
number of times will get more attention.
You will soon understand that it can be very hard to wade through a mass of
Tweets and find an individual Tweet, particularly as some people will post 10-20
Tweets at a time.
This is another tactic that appears to work quite well because you take up a large
chunk of someone’s Twitter page they pay some attention and read your posts.
At least that is the theory. What may well happen is people see you making lots
of posts and noise and unfollow you.
You will have to test this to determine exactly what happens to your followers
when you do this. It must be successful as a lot of marketers are doing this so it
is worth a try.
Remember that Twitter only allows you to use 140 characters, which means you
are going to have to really think about what you are posting and how you phrase
things. The benefit of this is that you tend to post well targeted useful
information.
Tweet regularly and ensure you use terms and keywords relating to your niche
(without keyword stuffing) and this will help you get established in your niche and
for your targeted followers to find you.
8. Where Next For Twitter?
Nobody knows what the future holds for Twitter. Its star is definitely rising but
how long it can ride the hype nobody knows. Both MySpace and Facebook were
the subject of excessive media hype over the last few years and now Twitter has
picked this up.
Where it will take Twitter, we can’t say and certainly we don’t know where Twitter
will end up when the media cloud lifts.
The fundamental principle of Twitter is sound, though the majority of people join
Twitter and Tweet infrequently. Those that do Tweet are fanatical about it and
praise Twitter in every breath.
In many respects it is like the other social networks that have experienced similar
media hype.
It is a powerful tool for you as a marketer, but only if you are willing to put in the
time and effort to use the site. You need to spend time on Twitter building
relationships and followers and Tweeting useful information for your followers to
read.
That really is the key to succeeding with Twitter.
Building relationships is the key to succeeding with any social network. You must
be careful not to spread yourself too thin. Many marketers rush to work on every
social network site there is and fail to do anything on any of them.
Those that succeed with social networking spend their time focused on one or
possibly two social networks.
Whatever is going to happen with Twitter, it will be around for the long term. The
media hype has helped it immensely with its increased user base and investment
capital from outside.
Once the dust has settled and the media has moved on to the next “big thing”
Twitter will be able to continue to build their reputation and their services.
With more and more applications being developed for Twitter it is certain to retain
its popularity and to develop more and more ways to keep its fan base loyal and
using the site.
