• An act of protest or rejection

IMPORTANCE OF
REVOLT IN 1857?
• It was the first war of Indian
  independence against British rule
• The discontent among different
  sections of Indian society resulted
  in this revolt

POLITICAL CAUSES
• Doctrine of Lapse
• Annexation of princely states
• Reservation of high profile jobs
  for English men

ECONOMIC CAUSES
• High taxes under new revenue
  policies
• Cottage industries faced tuff
  competition from machine made
  goods
• Peasants were impoverished
• Craftsmen and artisans became
  unemployed

SOCIAL AND
RELIGIOUS CAUSES
• Christian Missionaries
• Several social reforms
• Taxes on religious places

MILITARY CAUSES
• Low salary
• Highest post given to Indians
  was Subedar
• No special allowance was given
• They were force to take pledge
  for fighting outside the country

IMMEDIATE CAUSE
• Introduction of ‘The Enfield Rifle’ in
  1856 to train the Indian soldiers
• Use of greased cartridges made from
  the fat of cows and pigs
• This hurt the religious sentiments of
  Indian soldiers & they refused to use
  these cartridges
• When Indian soldiers were forced to
  use them the revolted against it

• Limited area
• Lack of proper planning
• No effective leader
• Non participation native rulers
• Non participation of educated
  Indians
