You can see here that in social media sphere, customers and workers participate within a community driven social environment, creating a Collective Intelligence. An example is how facebook is used at OTEN, DE is very isolating, we have teaching areas such as Child Serv and AOD & Mental Health were teachers and students are interacting, informaly and incidentaly with very positive results for students and for teachers.

These are some of the latest stats on Facebook, looking at the Australian stats, there are over 10 million users and nearly 50% penetration of the population. What does this mean for us?
OTEN has over 30 Facebook Pages, the main OTEN page has over 4,000 fans and some of the other pages have up to 800 fans.
The same applies to TAFE, those students born after 1990 have not known a world without the internet.
Even though 46% of consumers rely on email to share content, only 15% respond as compared to 24% on facebook. Gen Y & X consider email passe, in fact some Universities do not use email anymore.

Facebook is all about community, students engage each other informally and share ideas and resources and encourage each other.
When Engaging Users on FB Pages, there are 3 basic things to remember. Respondto student questions/problemsAskquestions,Postany good news stories, links, resource. These are the basics and if you stick with these you should have a successful page.The more you put into it the more you and your students will get out of it.
There is a right and wrong way to engage students. Remember that facebook is an informal environment and should be treated as such.

Qantas had an Engine problem last year and news broke on twitter and spread quickly. Meantime they were still trying to draft up a press release. This loss of control forced qantas to rethink their engagement with customers. Now its first port of call is Facebook and Twitter.
