3. Pistoia Mission Lower the barriers to innovation by improving interoperability of R&D business processes through pre-competitive collaboration www.pistoiaalliance.org
4. Agenda – Data & Query Services Introduction Pierre Menard, Pistoia Technical Committee Chair RDF + SPARQL Bob Stanley, CEO at IO Informatics Eric Prud’hommeaux, W3C HCLSIG OData Pablo Castro, Principal Architect at Microsoft Q&A Wrap-up
5. Background – Data as a Service Why Authoritative/master data sources Unlock data silos to leverage existing information assets Integrate with reporting, analytics, and collaboration tools to improve decision making Self-service data mashups Design criteria Neutral technology Choice of API Choice of data format Choice of query language Choice of … Did you know standards exist?
6.
7. Benefits of aligning to standards Functionality Generic mechanisms for representing data and relationships between data Query semantics for searching, filtering, sorting your data Less code you have to write, support and maintain. Good design API stability Efficiency Extensibility Backward/forward compatibility API versioning Paging Don’t reinvent the wheel!
8. Benefits of aligning to standards Inter-operability Native support in applications means little or no integration work Supportability Online community available to you Easier to find support and maintenance staff Web friendly Supports selective partner integration Aligns well to modern computing approaches such as cloud and mobile computing RESTful Resource centric approach aligns very well to data services Easier for your end users Benefits from piggybacking off HTTP (caching, security, etc)
9. It’s not just about technology Integrated capability Technology Process People Culture
10. Pistoia wants to gauge your interest Should Pistoia align to these standards in Pistoia portfolio projects? Will you align to these standards in your projects/products? Are you interested in future informational sessions like this one?
11. Today’s Speakers Bob Stanley, CEO of IO Informatics Eric Prud’hommeaux, W3C HCLSIG Pablo Castro, OData Inventor and Principal Architect at Microsoft
