When switching to cloud development, you're required to learn new tools, new paradigms, and new coding patterns. But what about the tools you’re already familiar with? We’ll take a tour of some useful tooling available to C# developers working with AWS built around familiar stalwarts like Visual Studio, PowerShell, and the dotnet CLI. We’ll also meet some new favorites along the way as we show the minimal and easy code changes needed to transform an existing C# WebAPI project to run in a serverless architecture.

In this talk we’ll discuss best practices for using Docker to develop microservices. We’ll dive into the Dockerfiles anti-pattern and why they're not suitable for test-driven development. We'll then present best practices for how to separate build, test and deployment of containers in an automated fashion. Lastly we'll discuss why keeping your containers as small as possible is important and which challenges you'll face when doing so.

You have a robust set of tests and you're using a continuous integration server, so you feel great about your project. You're ready for the next step - continuous delivery. Automatically deploying your changes to production can be a scary prospect for many teams, but in this talk we'll look at some real world examples in high stakes situations where continuous delivery allows teams to move faster and have greater confidence in their code. We'll walk through a sample CI/CD setup used on a real-world PHP-based ecommerce site and show how you can use this setup for your projects.

Application requirements have changed significantly over the past 20 years and we’re now building software which has to handle potentially millions of users and billions of devices. The reactive manifesto is a set of common traits shared by applications capable of handling these new requirements. Akka is the canonical example of a toolkit for building such applications, but thanks to a team of dedicated developers, Akka has arrived on the CLR in the form of Akka.Net. This session looks at the key principles of Akka.Net and how using these you can build applications which handle potentially massive traffic.

At Netflix, we continue to improve upon our continuous delivery process. We thrive in a hybrid environment, where every developer is able to deploy code, and with that freedom comes the responsibility for ensuring that our customers are not negatively impacted. We have constructed Open Source tools toward a Continuous Delivery solution. In this presentation, from QConSF 2013, you will learn about our tool chain so that you can determine which make sense in your environment.

5 of the most dangerous words you'll hear a developer say are "How hard could it be?". This talk tells the tale of what happens when you act on the question of "I'm going to write the next Google beater. How hard could it be?" This is the tale of how one person in a few hours is able to write something resembling a search engine thanks to the platform features of Azure and the productivity of F#. We'll see how we're able to use Azure search from F# to easily power our search internals, we'll use MBrace to rapidly find the most popular web pages on the internet and Azure functions to tie everything together to build up APIs and create on demand infrastructure. Add in a healthy mix of queues provided by Azure Service Bus and if you squint hard enough, you might just end up seeing something resembling a search engine. But seriously writing the next Google, just how hard could it be? A recording of this talk is available via SkillsMatter at https://skillsmatter.com/skillscasts/8901-f-sharpunctional-londoners-meetup

Page 8 of 8 3.Tutorial: Get Started with Eclipse in the Computer Lab[footnoteRef:1] [1: This tutorial is modified from Eclipse Tutorial – Getting Started by Dr. John Dean (http://captain.park.edu/jdean/tutorials/eclipseDnldTutorial.doc ) and How To Install Eclipse and Get Started with Java Programming from https://www3.ntu.edu.sg/home/ehchua/programming/howto/EclipseJava_HowTo.html (retrieved on 8/8/2015)] (Last updated: 8/16/2015) In this tutorial you will practice using Eclipse to build Java programs in computer labs (such as SC113) on campus. We will practice: A. Get familiar with the Eclipse IDE B. Set up the coding style preference (such as two-space indent and soft tab) used in this course C. Build and run the famous Hello World! Project D. Create a project by copying from an existing project E. Terminate a running program * * * Eclipse is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that allows you to enter, compile, and run programs. The programs can be written in one of many different languages, such of Java, C/C++, and PHP. Computer labs on campus already has Eclipse ready for Java development. The screenshot below shows the default layout of Eclipse. Take a look now and refer back to this screenshot as to where things are while you work through this tutorial. 1. Menu 2. Toolbar 3. Package Explorer: display all your projects and files. Yours will be empty at this point. 4. Editor 5. Outline view: displays data and method members of the currently selected Java class 6. Console panel If you accidentally closed or moved one of the panels above, you can always restore this default layout by: · First choose “Window” menu => “Open Perspective” => “Other…” and select “Java (default)” in the “Open Perspective” dialog. In Eclipse a perspective defines the initial set and layout of views in the Workbench window. · Then choose “Window” menu => “Reset Perspectives” and click “Yes” * * * Tip: when taking screenshots of the running result for your homework report, you may temporarily make the console panel section bigger so it shows the complete running result. Afterwards follow the steps above to restore the layout. * * * SAVING FILES: · Naturally, you are required to save your program files. In the lab, you are required to save your files on a USB flash drive storage device. If you're working at home, you may save your files on your computer's hard disk, but you're still required to have a flash drive so that you can transport your files to and from school. If you're at the school's lab, do not use the hard disks ever! ECLIPSE TUTORIAL: If you forget how to do something in Eclipse, it is up to you to carefully reread this Eclipse tutorial and figure out how to do things. To reduce the number of rereads, go through this tutorial slowly and try to remember what you're doing. This tutorial uses x: to refer to the drive that you're saving your work on. In the lab, x: should be replaced by the USB drive (assuming that yo.

Whether you’ve attended Greg’s earlier sessions or not, you probably recognize the value in automating application installs. The trick is in getting those installs to do their work silently, without prompting for questions. The hard part, indeed the art, is in that packaging of software. Microsoft MVP Greg Shields has been packaging and deploying software for nearly a decade. In this do-not-miss session, he’ll share his secret tricks in getting the job done. And tricks they are! Whether you’re deploying software through Group Policy, System Center Configuration Manager, a Windows deployment solution, or any of the third party options out there, this session contains the knowledge you’ll need for them all. Don’t miss this one. What you learn might just be the most powerful thing you discover all week at TechMentor.

"Never upgrade a server again. Never update your code. Instead, create new servers, and throw away the old ones!" That's the idea of immutable servers, or immutable infrastructure. This makes many things easier: rollbacks (you can always bring back the old servers), A/B testing (put old and new servers side by side), security (use the latest and safest base system at each deploy), and more. However, throwing in a bunch of new servers at each one-line CSS change is going to be complicated, not to mention costly. Containers to the rescue! Creating container "golden images" is easy, fast, dare I say painless. Replacing your old containers with new ones is also easy to do; much easier than virtual machines, let alone physical ones. In this talk, we'll quickly recap the pros (and cons) of immutable servers; then explain how to implement that pattern with containers. We will use Docker as an example, but the technique can easily be adapted to Rocket or even plain LXC containers.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry. Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.
