Notas do Editor

  1. A: I’m so excited -- We have something incredible for you. Right now we are starting a live 1-hour webinar with Social Media expert Phyllis Khare. Phyllis will show us an exclusive preview into her Social Media Ninja Workshop, where you will learn how to take FULL advantage of the 4 major social networking channels: YouTube, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter (and maybe a little dip into LinkedIn). This knowledge is absolutely essential for your success in the online marketplace, and this is a webinar you don’t want to miss.Today she will be showing us how to get more visibility and buzz for your product, app, or story, and learning exactly what it takes to convert views into revenue.I want to start with a little bit about Phyllis:Phyllis is the author of two comprehensive books on social media marketing; Facebook Marketing All-In-One for Dummies, and Social Media Marketing eLearning Kit for Dummies. She has been a featured guest on Social Media Examiner, eMarketingVids, and Social Media Manners Twitter Events. She also recently became a Social Media columnist for EVERY magazine published by SocialMediaMags.com, which means her expertise will reach an additional 14.5 million people. To top it off, she was recently a local speaker for the prestigious TEDxWomen conference. If that’s not enough, Phyllis is also the Social Media Director and a regular columnist for iPhone Life magazine, so we know she really knows her stuff!
  2. She said she’d like to share:"4 Quick Ways to Add Connections on Social Media”"How to Add Credibility with your Design""The Top 2 Things you Absolutely Need on your App Website""How to Manage Your Social Media Time, so you don't go crazy!"So we have a LOT to cover in an hour! Phyllis, are you ready?
  3. P: Thanks Alex for that very generous introduction --A: No problem Phyllis -- we are very excited to finally have you on a webinar! You have been very busy doing a lot of work with businesses -- getting their social media marketing functional.P: Yes, It's always so amazing to me to see how most businesses have either dismissed social media for marketing, or started and stopped their efforts before they get any pay-off. I can't tell you how many Facebook pages I've seen where you can tell -- no one's at home! And it's really a shame because they could just make a few little adjustments and have a much better experience.I'll give you a little example of this. You know that we have this amazing system set up for app developers with iPhone Life magazine. Any app developer can open up a vendor page and give us app codes to distribute in a weekly giveaway -- we have given away hundreds of codes for developers -- for free --. The interesting thing is -- when a developer fills in the form to give us the codes there are two social media fields they can fill in -- one for their Twitter username and one for their Facebook page -- and Alex -- almost 80% of these developers don't have a Twitter or Facebook page! 80%!! By not having these two social platforms set up they immediately lose out on all sorts of extra marketing we could do for them -- again -- for free --.<insert image of form> And many times, when they DO have a Facebook or Twitter account -- they aren’t coming close to really maximizing the benefit of the social platform.
  4. A: I'm pretty sure we have app developers or Apple vendors that create and sell accessories on the call today. Let’s see a show of hands, just type in YES, if you have an app or accessory you’re trying to market. Alright, how about those of you wanting to market a product in the future? I know you've been working really hard to figure out ways to help them - specifically. What's the plan for this webinar today?P: I going to use those four sections you mentioned in the intro and jump right into some actionable things they can do right away on social media to help open more doors to more customers. So let’s start with:"4 Quick Ways to Add Connections on Social Media” So I’ll go through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Google Plus -- and maybe throw in some LinkedIn -- because that is a huge black hole with a lot of app developers -- and it could be so helpful if they knew how to use it!
  5. So how do you add more connections on Twitter?Twitter is one of those places that either you intuitively "Get" right away or you have to learn how to use it. But Twitter has recently re-designed itself (again) to be a bit more user-friendly. In fact, if you open a new account today they take you through a little tutorial. Back when I joined -- they just threw you in the water and expected you to figure out how to swim on your own. I spent hundreds of hours figuring it all out back then. And some people have strong opinions about Twitter, but most do not know how to market on it correctly. They either just throw out codes and coupons and push-market everything or they put it on auto-pilot with RSS Feeds and then let it run itself. BOTH of which are horrible ways to use Twitter. One of the most important things they can do is use a little SEO in their username, and their bio. These two things are really very basic, but I'm amazed how many businesses don't do this. The Twitter username is extremely important. If you have one app -- and that's it -- you aren't going to develop anything else -- then your username absolutely needs to be the name of the app--because you are branding the name of the app.If you are a company -- like Oceanhouse Media for example, and you have lots of apps that are in one genre -- (they develop all those wonderful Dr. Suess books) then you need to use your company name as your username--because you are branding the name of the company. If you develop apps that are wildly different from each other; like Bunny Run - (a game for 4 year olds) and Kill the Vampire - obviously a game for a different group of customers -- DON'T create a Twitter account that markets them both under the same name. You really need two different Twitter accounts. You can't market to the same set of people for those two different types of apps. I hate to call someone out here, but let’s look at a typical app developer Twitter account. He’s missed so many opportunities for marketing. For example, he has decided to brand his name – which is fine, but he should have put the names of at least a couple of his apps in the bio – he has room for more text, and little known tips is – you don’t have to put the actual geo-location in this field – unless you think your local market needs to know you live in Brooklyn, be a little more creative here. Put an app name here “developer of YoSanta” The good news is if you click his website link it takes you to his About.me page – which I’m a big fan of --
  6. See how he listed all his apps on this nice online business-card site?
  7. Now the bio is just as important. Remember, one of the main things people do in Twitter is use it to Search. So right now, someone is on Twitter searching for your name, or app, your company. I wonder how many people have searched on Twitter -- like they would in Google -- to see what comes up!A: I’m sure some people on this call are doing it right now. I did it just the other day!P: haha -- I hope they come back - because I want to tell them how to fix some problems they might find!I'm sure...everyone has developed a set of keywords for their business - their apps -- and those keywords are going to be really important to use in your Twitter bio. You get 160 characters to have a compelling pitch for people to read and decide if they are going to follow you AND to use as many keywords as you possibly can to be found in Searches. You have a separate field for your website address, but you can also create clickable links in the bio, too. When I work with businesses, we spend a good amount of time working on this bio. It is one of the most important marketing "doors" you have.Notice how Angry birds – instead – used that space as a customer service listing. They are big enough to where they don’t need to worry about search too much, but most business DO need to think about it.
  8. And quickly – here are a few more things to do with Twitter to add more connections:Join Twitter Chats – one of my favorite things to do onlineUse Hashtags effectively – overused sometimes, but still the best thing for SearchUse Twellow and Twellowhood– make sure you have a verified account and your profile filled in there. You can follow people from their interface MUCH easier than any other way.Use Twitter Lists – there is a lot of advanced marketing around using Twitter Lists. Most people use this to get organize how they see other people’s tweets, but there are some great uses for marketing, too.Twitter widgets – Twitter has some widgets you can add to your website or blog that will let someone Follow you without leaving your website – just like Facebook has –Avoid auto-bots – I lean in the direction of only working with organic means to add connections on Twitter – I rarely advise using an auto-bot for Following people on Twitter.A: Why is that Phyllis? Why should people stay away from auto-bots? Can’t that be an easy way to get lots of followers?
  9. A: OK -- how do you add connections on Facebook?P: Oh boy. Facebook. I co-wrote Facebook Marketing All-In-One for Dummies -- over 600 pages of pure Facebook goodness. Even with all the recent changes in Facebook, this book is still vital -- which is amazing. The three of us, me, Amy and Andrea are all marketing consultants -- and we put a lot of marketing ideas into this book, but I have developed some of my best ideas for this new space I developed for app developers.A: Phyllis I have seen a lot of Facebook pages that seem deserted, there’s nothing happening there. P: Yes, me, too. I have two examples of app developers and what they are doing right and where they are missing the boat. I hope they don't mind me using them as examples! One is Oceanhouse Media and the other is everybody's favorite Angry Birds.
  10. They have their company logo in the profile image, AND their newest app. This way they are continuing to brand their company, but advertise their apps. Facebook is very generous with this huge space of 180 x 540 pixels where you can basically create a banner ad. Remember though, most people will only see your Page once -- if at all -- they will see it to Like it -- maybe, but from that point forward, people will only see your posts in their news feed. But that one time is really important, so don't throw it away by not using this space effectively. And hands-down the best way to add more connection to your Facebook Page is with a custom landing tab!
  11. A: What's custom landing tab?P: You can create a tab or page that you can design that a person sees if they haven't LIKED your Page yet. Some people call it a Welcome tab -- it is a BIG opportunity to make a connection. You see, if someone doesn't click that LIKE button, they will not see your posts in their newsfeed. They might see some activity in their ticker -- but that's too involved to go into right now -- but basically, you need to convince someone to click that Like button. Now Oceanhouse has not done that. <insert AngryBirds FB image>But Angry Birds has -- they have what is called a "Reveal Tab" - which means if you have not clicked Like yet - you see one thing -- and after you click the Like button you see something else - something else is revealed. Some businesses use it to reveal a special code or coupon code or discount code --You absolutely HAVE to give people a compelling reason to click the Like button, otherwise their attention goes to something else very quickly and you've lost the opportunity to connect with a potential new customer.Alex – Phyllis, can we go to a Facebook page, and see some good examples of reveal tabs?
  12. And quickly – here are some more ways to add connections on Facebook:Deck out the profile image – use all available space for advertising your product or appUse photos effectively with links – size your photos correctly and always have next actions steps with links in the photo commentsCreate a custom Landing tab – MUST have a compelling benefit for someone to click that Like buttonUse Facebook Ads – very powerful way to find new customers – if done correctly!Host live video events and demonstrations – fun way to involve people right on Facebook. Takes time to develop, but worth it.Explore Insights – you might find out your connections are a different demographic than you think they are…
  13. P: YouTube is one of the most amazing social spaces. In a way, it's a bit like the Wild West, but YouTube is re-inventing itself (again) and I think this space has the most potential for marketing  -- mainly because once you have an incredible way to use video you can post those videos on Twitter and Facebook and LinkedIn -- YouTube is like the MotherShip of the creation process!A: Phyllis, I’ve also seen a lot of bad video on YouTube. P: Yes, me, too. But I've also seen some pretty amazing things – like this video of Thomas Suarez – did you see this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehDAP1OQ9ZwMost app developers think of YouTube as a place where their app gets reviewed -- and there are LOTS of app review Channels on YouTube. Some are really good like LifeHacker and there are lots of Channels that are trying to make a name for themselves. iPhone Life has a Channel -- as you well know -- and you guys review apps, too. I wonder if anyone on this webinar has seen your really funny "A-List" episodes?A: Haha, yeah, those are fun to make. For those of you who don’t know, at iPhone life we started doing a weekly tech news show, with funny skits and product reviews, you can check it out atyoutube.com/iphonelifemagazine -- all one word -- iphonelifemagazine. You’ll see some of my bits in there too.P: I'm so thrilled with how those videos are evolving, by the way. The more fun you guys have with them, the more views they get. Interesting how that happens...
  14. So if I could give one tips about working with YouTube -- it would be this -- first of all -- have your ducks in a row in YouTube. Set up an account for your app -- really design the channel page to reflect your app. YouTube is rolling out a new design -- and it’s really in the middle of that process -- so I makes it hard for people like me who are trying to teach people how to use it! So, I’m going to add more tutorials in the learning space as YouTube gets it together. And one of the Quick ways to Add Connections -- or Subscribers on YouTube, is to design your background image to include a call to action with an arrow to the Subscribe button!
  15. A little story about iPhone Life’s YouTube page – when it first opened – it was just a repository for video they shoot at a conference – so the bloggers could insert them into posts. The video had very few views and it basically sat for a year. Now mind you, during that year – I was getting pretty obnoxious about it – “We have to activate YouTube – “ And finally they partnered with a wonderful company called Zebra Media. I taught them how to really rock the SEO on YouTube (which is the second largest search engine online) and now they consistently get 10 times the number of views they were getting. And when they really get the right keywords in the titles – they get thousands of views. So, after you get your Channel put together, find all the sites that review apps -- connect with them -- get some great reviews -- then put all those reviews on one playlist -- and send that playlist out through all your social accounts. Did you follow that? The power of the playlist is sorely underutilized on YouTube.
  16. And quickly – here are some more ways to add Subscribers on YouTube:Call to Action on the background image – easy to designUse good SEO skills in the title and info – can make all the difference in being found in search – or notActively reply to comments – keep the conversation goingUse app reviewers already there – use the list I have developed for youExplore YouTube Insights to see what’s working – especially Hotspots
  17. P: So that was a quick skim of some of the basic things you can do right away to add more Followers, Connections and Subscribers to your social accounts. I haven’t covered LinkedIn or Google Plus – and want to save that for the end – OK Alex?A: Sounds great. Let’s move to adding credibility with your social design – what does that actually mean?P: In a nutshell it means to have your branding design consistent across all social platforms. Have your all your images:Facebook ProfileFacebook Cover Image (If you are doing the Subscription system in Facebook)Twitter background imageYouTube background imageAnd all assorted thumbnail ImagesEither designed by the same person – or at least use the same colors and fonts if you are trying to design it yourself.
  18. Here’s an example of an app developer that hasn’t (yet) branded across all the social platforms – missed opportunity.
  19. You can see they haven’t taken that beautiful puzzle app and used those images in YouTube or Twitter – yet.
  20. Here’s an example of an app developer that HAS branded across all the social platforms. The basic point being here – that you need to create a branded look across all your social accounts. Just like you have a set of keywords you can use everywhere – you can develop a set of images that you use everywhere. Most people are visual learners – they will learn to recognize your images before they will recognize your text.
  21. A: Oh! I think I know: Does it have something to do with apples? Lol, ok another guess, is it… time and Money?P: Yes – in a way that is it, but I have a few more “Top 2 Things”On Your Website: Facebook Follow Widget – called a Like Box and a perfectly designed Contact Page
  22. On Your Website: Facebook Follow code, Google + 1 (add to circle code too) and Twitter Follow code. This way – no one has to leave your website to join all your social accounts.
  23. On Your Website: and a perfectly designed Contact Page that includes your social accounts. Of course you should always have them top right, too, but to include them on the contact page is a nice touch.
  24. I could add so many things!Human faces – depends on your product to some extent, but in general, humans need to see humans to decide if they trust you enough to purchaseTestimonials – text and video800 numbers in 100 point font
  25. …or turn into a zombie? This is what people look like when they try to do it all – by themselves without thinking things through a bit and organizing their social media marketing.I have two very important tools I use – one is Hootsuite the other is crowdbooster.
  26. In your mix of marketing post and tweets – Hootsuite has a great scheduling system called Publisher. You can sit down and schedule a week’s worth of direct marketing links to post through out the week. THEN when you sit down each day to connect with your social accounts – live – you can focus on the conversations and searching functions instead of worrying about getting your links to purchase out there.
  27. Crowdbooster will analyze your accounts and tell you when you get the most engagement – when you know those times – THAT’S when you do your social tasks. No use in posting at 10 am if no one is going to see it.Those are my two vital tools for marketing. There are literally hundreds of things you can use – LOTS of different companies. I’ve probably tried them all and continue to test them, but these two are always in use.
  28. A: So you mentioned this space you've created for people to learn how to use social media marketing to the greatest advantage. P:  YES! And what I did was organize it so that there are basic training sessions and advanced marketing sessions. So you can start from the very beginning with opening a brand new Twitter account, or jump into the advanced marketing sessions --And even with all the information in the tutorial sessions I still find that there are some very specific things I can give people that will make a big difference in their social media marketing, so I have included a private consultation in this package. If someone took all these sessions inside this learning space with me - privately - it would cost many thousands of dollars and would take months and months of consultation sessions. Now that I have most of it down in video and document form -- I can spend that one consultation session and get to the most targeted points for a person’s business. And anyone who purchases this learning space also has 60 days of email support from me -- seriously -- how cool is that? So, for 60 days you can ask me ANY question about anything in the course and I will answer it for you through email. If I get the same questions over and over -- I will create more content for the learning space to answer those questions, too.A: 60 days of email support AND a private consultation? That alone is worth the price -- which we haven't explained yet P:Sure -- the whole thing -- if I were to sell it at full price would be $1295. But because you guys at iPhone Life are helping to promote this, I can offer it at a discount of $875. And I have some payment plans available, too. I really want people to get all this training and get the private consulting -- so they can start to reach a much larger audience make more money with their creations!I did the math once, and I’ve spent approximately 13,000 hours online testing and marketing with social accounts. Between the two books I have over 1000 pages of how-to steps and content. And I normally charge $350/hour for consultations -- so yeah -- this is a great deal. And as we discussed earlier -- this learning space will let you learn one step at a time. You can take my 13,000 hours of research and testing and reap the benefits at your own pace.A: SoPhyllis, I know some people here probably have more experience with Social Media, what are in some of the advanced marketing sessions?P: Sure, in the Twitter section, I have all the basic sessions -- and I should tell you -- these are all video tutorials - and how-to documents -- I then have "How to Use Twitter Search to Find New and Existing Customers" "How to Use Existing Hashtags Without Being Marked as Spam!" "Twitter Chats for Developing Re-Tweeting Cheerleaders"  "How to Set-Up Auto-Tweets for Maximum Benefit" and many more. And Alex, I'm still adding to this library of tutorials.A: I really like these types of learning spaces, because people can take it one step at a time, or skip to the parts that they need. You know, you can just focus on Facebook for a month and not feel any pressure to complete all the sessions.P: Right, because I set it up so it is available to people -- forever. There's no time limit to complete anything. It will be there when they are ready.A: That's so awesome. I know I would like to take these lessons, but I’m pretty busy most of the time, and I’m sure people here are very busy as well, how long are these learning spaces?P: Each session is anywhere from 2 minutes to 10 minutes -- that's all -- very easy to digest!A: Ok - we are getting close to the end of the webinar – I know some people have questions– and I know you still want to talk a little bit about linkedIn. So just to recap… it’s $875 for full access to the learning space, forever, and 60 days of unlimited email consultations with you Phyllis Khare, etc, etc (I’ll just read it from the slide). That’s a freaking good deal. Anyways, let’s talk about LinkedIn…
  29. Do you want to go on to LinkedIn or take questions?Questions --
  30. P: Yes -- a lot of app developers don't really consider LinkedIn when they thing about marketing their products. And that's huge missed marketing opportunity. Just like Twitter -- right now -- someone is looking for you on LinkedIn -- they are either searching for your name, your company name or your app name. What they find - or don't find - will portray you as having your act together or not. If you are serious about your business, you need to do at least a few basic things in LinkedIn.A: Like what?P: First of all -- make sure you have a personal account. And make sure you take the time to fill it in to what LinkedIn calls "100%" Then, make sure you create a "Company" page. Remember how we talked about what to brand -- either your app or your company? The name of your Company page needs some thought, too. Here's the Angry Birds company page on LinkedInBut notice they missed a tremendous opportunity here -- On a company Page you can create a tab called "Services" or "Products" and they didn't do that like iPhone Life did --
  31. Do you see the tab for Products?
  32. When you click that tab you can place a tremendous amount of text and embed video – so much. And so many companies miss this opportunity.
