This
clip is video put together by a medical
student who wanted to show how ‘The
Notebook’ deals with dementia in the film.
It uses all the clips from the film and shows
the interaction between the married couple
and how they deal with the wife dementia.

I found the dialogue in this clip really useful for
inspiration for the script for our film. The
dialogue is simple but puts forward the key
aspects of the disease. He also puts forward
softly but firmly how the disease will develop.
The fact that the doctor is positioned lower that
the husband shows that he wants to show
respect and put him in a higher position in
respect.

This is a key element of our film as our main
character gets confused about his family. Similarly
the female character becomes confused on the
identity of her husband. Throughout the clip the
audience remains eye level, symbolising that the
audience should respect her. However she is placed
lower than her husband, signifying how she is so
confused about a ‘stranger’ that she feels
threatened. This is important for my film as the
audience must still feel respect for the dementia
patient rather than being demoralised by the
audience.

I found that watching this clip, that flashbacks
really helped me sympathise with the
characters. It signifies the decline of their
relationship but also how love tries to remain
strong. The continuation of the red cardigan
relates the two characters together and joins the
two time periods together. I think that this
would be a good feature for our film as the
audience can clearly recognise that the
flashbacks are of the same people.
