[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],CORE CONCEPTS Five Chapter
B ODY MECHANICS
Decision Making and Planning ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],before lifting. ,[object Object],[object Object]
[object Object],[object Object],Guidelines for Lifting
Use legs, not back, to lift.
Keep weight close to your body.
Power-Lift Position Power-Grip
Safety Note Back injuries are a leading cause of long-term disability for EMTs. Lift safely.
[object Object],[object Object],Safe Reaching Techniques (Continued)
Safe Reaching Techniques ,[object Object],inches in front of your body. ,[object Object],reaching.
Safe Pushing and Pulling ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],(whenever possible) . (Continued) body.
Safe Pushing and Pulling ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],overhead. (arms close to your sides) . (Continued)
Safe Pushing and Pulling ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
P RECEPTOR P EARL Few things are more important to the safety and longevity of an EMS provider than proper lifting and moving techniques. Habits that begin early are practiced throughout a career. Remember to emphasize proper lifting and moving techniques when working with new EMT-Bs, and be sure to use those techniques yourself.
T YPES OF MOVES
Emergency Moves ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Emergency Move Clothes Drag
Emergency Moves Inline Drag Firefighter’s Drag
Emergency Move Firefighter’s Carry
Emergency Move One-Rescuer Assist
Emergency Move Two-Rescuer Assist
Urgent Moves ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],(Continued)
[object Object],[object Object],Urgent Moves patient decline:
Urgent Move with Spinal Precautions
Nonurgent Moves ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Nonurgent Move - Extremity Carry
P ATIENT-CARRYING DEVICES
P RECEPTOR P EARL New EMT-Bs may feel awkward when walking down stairs, especially if they are facing backwards. Tell them: if you begin to lose your balance while carrying a patient down stairs, sit down if you are at the head end. If you are at the foot end, lean into the stairs to regain your balance.
Wheeled Ambulance Stretcher Portable Stretcher
Stair Chair Short Spine Board
Patient Immobilized on Long Spine Board
Scoop (Orthopedic) Stretcher Basket “Stokes” Stretcher
Vest-Type Extrication Device Flexible Reeves Stretcher
Patient Immobilized in Vest-Type Extrication Device
Moving Patients to Carrying Devices and Transferring Them to ED Stretcher
Patient Positioning ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],(Continued)
Recovery Position Unconscious Patients
Position of Comfort Shock Position No Spinal Injury
Position stretcher.
Pull sheet under patient taut.
Slide patient to hospital stretcher.
Be sure patient is centered. Raise side rail.
1. Describe the principles of body mechanics. 2. What are the basics of lifting and moving? 3. List three types of moves. 4. Name five patient-carrying devices. R EVIEW QUESTIONS
