The document analyzes the cover photo of a magazine. It shows a student in a science lab, surrounded by props like test tubes and a blackboard with a chemical structure. However, the student's casual outfit is inconsistent with the lab setting. While the props add to the atmosphere of an intelligent environment, the unrealistic costume undermines the believability. The photo uses techniques like natural lighting, rule of thirds composition, and shallow depth of field to create an intense atmosphere and focus on the test tube the student is holding. However, the typography uses colors and positioning that make some of the text harder to read.
2. Setting
The cover photo is set in a science lab denoted by
the props e.g safety glasses, test tubes and the
reference to a chemical structure on the blackboard.
Theses references show scientific studies and infer
intelligence. This implies the magazine is created for
a specific demographic audience.
Costume
The costume doesn’t follow the theme of science, I
would expect a white lab coat making the photo less
aesthetically pleasing and making the setting more
believable. I would also expect no jewelry to be
shown again implying a science laboratory.
Props
Having science props adds to the atmosphere that is
denoted as a clever, hard working environment,
personally the situation seems fake because of the
costume, being a casual everyday outfit.
3. NVC
The non verbal communication present in this cover
is an action shot of a student concentrating on her
investigation. She is relaxed with indirect address
implying a voyeuristic attitude connoting
determined students even though the teachers
aren't in shot.
Lighting
The natural lighting created a relaxed environment,
making the subject look like a average student
connoting a positive denotation.
4. The photography uses the rule of thirds and this
mixed with the indirect address creates a focus point
on the test tube/glass beaker the student is holding.
The shallow depth of field makes the subject the
dominant focus. The medium close up creates an
intense atmosphere that makes you feel apart of the
experiment.
The single shot has a realism look, like a
documentary.
The typography gives mixed messages. The main
headline is bold and easily read and catches the
audience’s main focus. Choosing white for the main
headline typography ensures the text doesn't fade
into the background of a busy picture. However the
remaining text colour and positioning makes the text
harder to read and has less focus. For example the
bottom left is in green but the bottom right is
hidden by the reflection of the glass.
