2. Types of Music Magazine Genres
There are many different types of music magazine
covers and this PowerPoint is going to show the most
common genres around today with modern society
and the target markets for these magazines. The
conventions they use and how they are uniquely
targeted to there audience. I am hoping that by the
end of this PowerPoint I will have enough examples to
see what genre I will use when it comes to making my
own magazine cover.
3. R&B
The images here are examples of R and B magazines.
The target audience for these would range from 18-26 year
olds that have a passion for this genre of music.
The magazines all feature a main artist and you could say
with the way they are posing the producers are trying to give
the magazine a sex appeal. By researching the different
magazines I would say that they are trying to appeal to
females more than males as the genre is supported better by
females . The woman that feature would have an influence on
females that inspire to be like them, who want there body/
image etc.
The magazines include bright colours that make it vibrant
and colourful making the magazine that more feminime.
Vibe magazine would be the only one two feature bold red
colours as this particular magazine usually targets males and
has a considerably more masculine look and the artists has
cleavage on show defiantly appealing to young males. The
magazines all follow the same general conventions. All the
magazines focus mainly on the cover artist and make sure
that they stand out amongst everything else the magazines
lighting are bright so it makes the mood of readers to be
better than reading a dull dark magazine.
The font style on the features are capitals but are small so
they don’t deter to much form the audience. They are also in
bright or white colours so they are giving of more of that
feminime appeal so you can clearly see that they all have the
same approach within this genre.
4. Pop
The target audience for these magazine's are defiantly young
teenage girls from 10-16.
The artists featured on these magazine’s are all common
artists within the industry and are general household names
that everybody has heard of. The artists are recent and would
be fresh in the minds of this target audience.
The colours are all reasonably the same and go for very
bright, colourful colours with the a lot of yellow pink and
purple. These are colours that would 100% appeal to this
particular age range.
There is bright lighting in all the covers this is to relate to the
happiness of the artists featuring. Everything is big and bold
something that would appeal more to the audience as they
do not want to be reading dull bring small font writing.
The language use in the magazines is simplistic so that young
girls can read it effortlessly without getting confused and
bored.
The artists are represented in a very happy and cool
environment looking like they love what they are doing.
5. Hip-Hop
Target audience would be teenage boys and young men between the
ages of 15- 24
As you can see magazines now use a lot of block colours red, white
and black these are general conventions for this genre it connotes,
blood, strength, wisdom, power etc. The colours allow for the
audience to imagine some these artists past life often from gangs,
dealt with drugs etc.
The artists used are known faces within the hip-hop industry today
and have been around for many years so they are well-known by the
readers and may in some way be inspirational to certain individuals.
Its all about the cover image in hip-hop magazines as it shows who is
boss and has the main headline that month .
There not smiling in these photos its all about them creating a
confident persona and ego so that they can use it to their advantage
and build there character up through the industry and make a real
name for themselves.
6. Classical
Classical music magazines are mainly aimed at the older
generation form an age range of about 40-60
This age range is generally more familiar with this particular genre
of music.
A familiar face known by many is Sir Paul McCartney however it
of this age group that group listening to him play music.
The colours are very soft relating to the mellowness and calming
of music that is classical.
The colours are strong whites and reds but the fonts are not
blocked and big, bold otherwise it would make it quite masculine
and wouldn't fit with the genre well.
The conventions are the same like most magazines and feature a
main cover artist in the middle and have a main masthead.
The general mood and feel the magazine give of are happy, vibrant
people generally having a good time and enjoying what they do,
writing and composing music.
7. Rock and Metal
The age range for these magazine is a lot more broader than
other genres as the music has a classic part that is vintage and
very familiar with older generation men so I would say that the
age of audience would be from 16- 40
Rock and metal magazine are very dark and gloomy, hinting it at
the strength and power of ones voice when doing screamo,
singing with heart.
Rock magazines have the same general conventions as other
music magazines but there colours are different using a lot of
blacks and white but with heavy font styles that can be faded or
have something going onto them like the kerrang magazine on
the left.
The faces on artists in rock and metal magazines are not usually
smiling as they are also trying to build this defenceless persona
making an alter-ego and allowing to build this strong character.
Fonts are bold and edgy giving quite a gritty feel to the magazine
relating to the pain and heartaque they often sing about in there
music.
8. Conclusion
With the research I have done, I have come to the
conclusion that the genre that best suits me is HipHop. I feel that I am most knowledgeable about this
genre and have more in common in my everyday life
with this genre than I would with the others. The
artists that feature in the this magazine genre interest
me and the females included do to, as there is always
that sex appeal when it comes to their target audience.
I am also interested in the old school Hip-Hop that
included Biggie and 2-Pac
