1. Rockin' Grandma Drummer Goes Viral
She isn't literally a Grandma Drummer, but “Mary the Grandma Drummer” is gone totally viral for
banging the bucket.
She's not even a grandmother, but she has been given the nicknames “Grandma Drummer” and
“Mary the Grandma Drummer” because she looks like she could be anyone's grandma.
“Grandma Drummer” didn't even no what YouTube was several days ago but someone recorded her on
video for doing what she's been doing for 48 years, playing the skins.
The 63-year-old rocker has gone viral for this video which shows off her skills when she played the
drums at Coalition Drum Shop in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The video has been viewed more than 3.4
million times.
The nickname “Grandma Drummer” is not accurate because Mary Hvizda has never been married and
doesn't have any children.
“It's different. I can't get used to being called Grandma," she said to WKBT a local TV station in
LaCrosse, Wisconsin. "I've never had children of my own and I never got married, but I am 63 and that
is certainly grandma's age."
Hvizda was actually in the drum shop because felt that itch to do what she loves. The percussionist
sold her personal set of drums about 20 years ago and has since had to find a place to play when the
mood hits.
“I still like to go to the music store and, you know, play a drum set and then that's it you know. My
music urge has been satisfied,” says Hvizda.
She started playing in an all-female rock band when she was 15 years old and then played in about a
dozen other bands around Wisconsin for the next 25 years.
