2. What have you learnt from your audience
research ?
To be sure that my music video would be successful with
audiences, I firstly needed to know what audiences like and
dislike seeing in music videos. Whether they prefer
performance, narrative or concept music videos.
After looking over an example question I picked out aspects of
it that I thought were good and then amended the question
that weren’t.
I then looked into the different ways that the questionnaire
could be sent and answered by people. Although asking
people with a hard paper copy of the questionnaire is an
effective and simple way of doing it I would be limited with
how many people I can ask.
3. Capturing Audience Feedback
I decided that an online survey would be a much
more effective way of collecting my data, as there is a
gigantic amount of people online that would be
about to answer the survey, as well as being about to
email it to people, as well as putting up links on
popular social networks such as Facebook and
Twitter.
I used the online survey site, Survey Monkey. Which
allows you to embed, email or link the survey for
people to answer.
4. Survey Results
Although audiences expect to see a variety of things
in a music video from dancing and instruments to
visual links and a location matching the genre. I was
able to find out that a narrative storyline in a music
video was the most popular type of music
video, closely followed by performance. .
And that it a near split with people caring whether
the artist or music cast are wearing clothes
associated to the music genre
5. Once I had recorded the data from the surveys I was
able to start thinking of possible ideas. This gave me
another way to capture some feedback on my music
video plans, asking the class. By asking my media
class for advice on how they picture the music video
after playing the song. I was able to get more
technological advice then that from the surveys, as
this was a class that knew and thought about micro-
elements not just about what would look cool.
6. Conclusion/Evaluation of Audience Research
I found the research I received really helpful to the
planning and decision making of my music video.
However I would of liked to of gained a bit more
audience feedback.
Next time I will;
Diversify the way I ask the questionnaire using both online
and in person.
Show draft versions of my music video to small groups as
well as posting it on social networks to attain feedback as I
work on the project.
Create a second questionnaire for the ancillary task, to
make sure they appeal to the audience. Rather then just
analysing proffsional media examples.
