Team B Members Marie Smith, Shannon West and William Soda. Students of Dr. Gwendolyn Dooley at Kaplan Online University.
The New Instructional Design and Information Management Department will require a start-up staff including management, middle management and support staff. Each position will also require equipment and training. The department will require a budget for the salaries, equipment and all other expenses. Based on the department’s needs, more positions may or may not be required.
Charlie Stockton will be the Project Manager in charge developing the Instructional Design and Information Management Department. He was hired by the director of the human resources department who is providing, by request from Charlie, one currently employed Training Department and Budgeting employee. Charlie Stockton brought on board Susie Wells, the Instructional Designer and Susie recommended Paul Petties as the department’s Graphics Designer. The Litmos LMS already offers a complete ready-to-use learning platform that is perfectly sized for the new department’s needs. The New Instructional Design and Information Management Department will operate on an annual budget of $300,000.00.
The content developer, as subject matter expert, is charged with building an educational system that would meet the training needs of the organization. The content developer is not just creating random courses. The curriculum suggests a relationship among the courses that the content designer is developing. This role can be established for approximately $65,000.00.
Graphics are an instructional design tool that assist with “the growing complexity of the design process which is a result of modern instructional theories that focus on rich multidisciplinary and often collaborative learning tasks” (Roytek,2010, p.172) (van Merienboer and Martens, 2002). A graphics designer could be hired for approximately $50,000.00.
The Graphics Designer will create or utilize graphics from the LOR to illustrate course content. There will be a considerable amount of graphic material created for original training material. It is his job to upload animated and interactive graphics to the online. A graphic designer can be hired for approximately $48,000.00.
Training Co. is a traditional training producer and is expanding to the online market. Charlie Stockton requested one person from the original training branch to work with Susie Wells to upload the traditional content into the new department’s computer systems. This individual is a trained curriculum developer and will bridge a connection between the new department and current employees.
The new department will be reportable to the corporate level. A current employee from the financial department who is knowledgeable in how the parent departments operate will be selected. The new employee will address the new department’s accounting needs and manage its finances. This person is directly reportable to Charlie Stockton.
The department will use standard computer hardware and software powerful enough to meet the needs of the personnel and support interface with learning materials. The department will require five computers.
Most of the work for the new department will be electronic but there will be some need for printed materials and traditional materials will need to be scanned and uploaded. The department will require two printers with scanning and document management capabilities.
In on-going design and development of the new department, the leadership will review the department design, establish a program for collaboration between employees and as its first management priority, it will upload training materials into the LMS as part of a coordinated effort between training, instructional design and graphics.
