10. Former IIT Madras Director P.V. Indiresan says
that the IITs have succeeded because
"by and large, IITs have enjoyed the
three basic freedoms of an educational
institution:
to choose whom to teach,
who will teach,
and what to teach.
The IITs also enjoy full cost budgetary support.
The IITs will remain successful so long as these
amenities continue."
11. The biggest achievement
of the IITs is that
they have provided world-class education
at a cost relatively affordable
to the average middle class family.
Without government funding of these
"institutions of national importance,''
most IIT students would probably not have been able to
afford such high quality education.
The generous subsidies given to the IITs have also allowed
them to attract students from all over India.
12. Given all the freedoms,
the IITs were able to create an environment of excellence
whose essence is captured in
Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s Poem
13. Where the mind is without fear
and the head is held high.
Where knowledge is free.
Where the world has not been broken up
into fragments by narrow domestic walls.
Where words come out from the depth of truth.
Where tireless striving stretches its arms
towards perfection.
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost
its way into the dreary desert sand of dead
habit.
Where the mind is led forward by Thee into
ever-widening thought and action.
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake.
