Cyber bullying involves using electronic technology to bully others. More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyber threats online such as harassment, cyber stalking, and exclusion. While technology allows for bullying awareness and reporting, it also enables bullying to occur anonymously and anywhere at any time. Both bullies and victims experience negative effects on their behavior and mental health. Prevention requires legislation, education for students and parents, and monitoring of online and technology use.

Positive: Websites can be created to bring more awareness to this issue. Videos can be uploaded that can create awareness as well. People are more aware of what is and it’s impact and can help prevent it. There are phone numbers victims can call for support. Victims can easily save emails, text messages and IM conversations, etc. to use as evidence against the perpetrator. Negative: Technology has brought a new level of bullying. It used to take place in the hallways of schools but now more prevalent on online platforms. Victims can never find a place to escape because it can now occur anywhere at anytime. Technology is constantly changing which means there are more and more ways in which a bully can bully someone.
The bully can hide behind a computer screen or cell phone it makes it much easier for them to bully other people. Bullies often create fake accounts using fake names so they can remain anonymous. They can often hide behind pseudo names that allow them to remain anonymous, again allowing it to be much easier for them to get away with it. Law has not kept up with the evolution of technology. Therefore, there is little legislation to combat cyber bullying.
Bullies often have low self esteem themselves and therefore look for a way to take it out on someone else (bring them down too). Accoring to one statsictc 60% of bullies have at least one criminal conviction.
Schools also need to establish and enforce consequences when they find out Cyber bullying is occurring. Establishing consequences gives reason for bullies to stop bullying. Parents need to monitor their kids and also inform them about cyber bullying and consequences for doing it.
