In what ways does your media product use , develop or challenges forms and conventions of real media products?
• The magazine, I have created repeats the same codes and convention from magazine likes XXL, Vibes and The source and I have used
these magazine for inspiration with the continuous use of black and yellow in my magazine and I have kept the same font throughout.
• In my magazine my main features were
Bar code
Date/price
Issue number
A unique selling point
main image + headline
Cover lines
Masthead
Strapline
• my contents page included
Selections
Page number
Promotions
Sublines
Web address/social networking sites, putting these features in creates convergence for the people that are reading this magazine and it
makes my magazine easier to access through other social media sites.
my double page spread uses conventions of a Rap magazine because of the bold colors and the simplicity of the double page spread, my
picture on my double page spread is on the left side because because that’s conventional and is also effective because when you open the
page the picture is the first thing you are drawn to and that creates more interest, my double page spread is also conventionbecause I make
the information very easy to read the font is big because I was thinking about people that would read this magazine don’t really want to read
but would be more interested in what they see .
I also put the artist social media information on my contents page this is in order for the readers to get more in touch with the artist when
they see there twitter and instagram information and this is a good way of creating convergence.
Also promotions in the magazine will interest people that are hip hop fans because my magazine is giving out free wireless tickets because at
the wireless performers like Asap rocky, meek mill , drake and 50 cent perform there and most of these artist that I named will feature in my
magazine.
How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
• Which stereotypical social group would your magazine
appeal to and why?
• The social group that I am trying to target is young black teenagers this is because black people are stereotypically
associated with hip-hop and this view has been around for man years because rap and hip hop grew from soul music and
black people are the ones who initially made soul music so rap and hip hop is a big part of our culture and the way we live
and you can see it through the music and it relates to what going on in reality, a way in which young black teenagers express
themselves is through rap music.
• Talk about specific codes and conventions you use in order
to attract this specific target audience.
• The codes and conventions was the promotion of the ‘wireless ticket’ because it is hip hop festival and a way of attracting
hip hop fans to read my magazine is by offering them something that is related with the genre, convergence is also a code
and convention that I have used in my magazine by using social media sites like instagram and Twitter which Is very popular
amongst teenagers so that they can keep up to date with the information the magazine provides and keep up to date with
there favorite artist, also the masthead I used was the color yellow so it contrasted with the black background, which makes
the masthead stand out for my audience the calligraphy makes the magazine stand out.
• Eg puff, color scheme, star appeal content of the interview,
etc.
• The codes and conventions I have used to attract the specific people are things like the color of the front cover due to the
gritty nature of hip hop and rap using the color black is essential for a successful Rap/Hip hop magazine and the color yellow
is used to signify like gold and all the luxuries that come with the success and the star appeal I used for this magazine is also
good because these artist have a big influence in this genre of music so it will draw in hip hop fans.
What kind of media institution (Publisher)
might distribute your media product and why?
• Who distributed vibe magazine?
• The magazine is distributed intermedia ever since the the company was purchased by the company and
the magazine is released every month and it sells around 300,000 copies every week to the whole of US
with new York being there main target.
• You will use them as yours is a similar product.
• for my magazine I have chosen Bauer because they are a very successful publisher and they have
published a wide range of magazines such as ‘kerrang’, ‘mojo’ and ‘Q’ , it would be good to use them as a
distributor because they have already published well known music magazine for this reason I think the
magazine Rap city will fit nicely into Bauer's portfolio, this is because my magazine will bring in more
audiences as it is different from their existing magazine.
• Make sure you explain this in a bit of detail and
how the publisher might reach and target your
audience base
• My target audience is young people aged 15-30, it is mainly aimed at males but also females, I chose this
age because it is a similar age group to myself so I can tailor my magazine to their needs, I targeted it at
males because most magazine are male dominated so targeting it at women will be difficult and risky, the
other reason I targeted it to men was because they are more female artist on the come up so the male
audience will have no enough females on he cover to keep their attention.
Who would be the audience for your
media product and why?
• Who is your mag aimed at? Age race, wealth, sex
(Hartleys seven subjectives)
• The average age my magazine is aimed for is 17, and the gender is male, the ethnicity is African American, there
employment is well-paid job and the geographic is London because this where the most black population is so
that’s where my main audience will be, and they will also have to be dedicated music fans because every week
issues are made so for them to purchase it every week.
• Katz uses and gratifications
• In my front cover I have a picture of a beautiful young lady so men will buy the magazine, she is a sex icon
amongst men so they will be more chance of them buying It and she is also a famous female rapper so she is
involved with the culture so men and teenagers who will buy this magazine will because she is a beautiful and she
also a part of the rap and hip hop culture.
• Maslow’s hierarchy
• Female will also buy this magazine because they aspire to be like the female artist on the front cover,
because rap and hip hop has always been a male dominated industry and for a female to be at the top
amongst men is an accomplishment so women will look at her as a source of inspiration because she
signifies power for young females.
How did you attract/address your
audience?
• Puff – what was it and why did you use it?
• The puff I used was ‘wireless tickets’ because it’s a hip hop festival which takes place in London and many big hip
hop artist come so this will create interest amongst the readers who use the magazine and it is fairly easy to enter
the competition this is important something that is easy to do because no one wants to go through a long
process.
• Mise en scene – eg the clothes you made your
model wear. Aspirational for your readers.
• The clothes I have used in my magazine are dark clothes to represent the dark nature of hip hop and black is the
stereotypical color used to represent hip hop for many years, after seeing all the rap and hip hop magazine I saw a
pattern because all the pictures had nothing going on in the background just a medium shot of the model or artist
and I tried to repeat this in my magazine.
• Editorial – how did this engage your core
audience
• I did the editorial on a separate page and I used the same codes and conventions, I described my ambitions for
this magazine hopefully this will attract the passionate audiences because my aims are to keep hip and rap fans
updated through my magazine.
What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
• Use of photoshop
• In the process of constructing my products I have learnt that there is no limit to what you can do with Photoshop
even though I found it difficult to learn how to use the application but after I had a better understanding I realized
that anything is possible the more time you dedicate the better your products will look.
• Specific examples of how you edited photos – use
of text tool, magic wand tool, etc
• The first example of me editing is in my front cover and how I used magic wand tool to remove the background in
the picture this allowed my picture to fit perfectly to my magazine and for it too look how it is and also the use of
text tool allowed me to put text on my magazine so that my audience would e able to read my context, which
meant I had to change the size of text and font in order for it to be appropriate for my magazine.
• How you used ‘dafont’ and chose a text from
that.
• I used dafont for my masthead ‘rap city’ and after looking for a long time I found a font that linked in perfectly
with my masthead, the font I got from datfont was had cities craved into each letter so my magazine name and
font linked with each other.
Photography Planning
• Pics of photos here and a brief explanation of
how you organised the photoshoot.
Analyzing my Front Cover
Masthead: the
masthead is the main
text and is the banner
and is always
situated.
Cover lines : cover
lines are the
secondary stories and
is not as important as
the headline.
Cover star: The cover
star is the main image
on the magazine and
its located in the
middle of the front
cover.
Analyzing my Contents Page
I continued the same color scheme from my
front cover to my contents page and I listed
all the stories
Analysing my Double Page spread
Interview
My double page spread has all the
codes and conventions that is
needed in a double page spread
like page number, web address,
magazine logo, images and I kept
my double page very simple
because hip hop and rap
magazines tend to be kept simple.
