ARTIST STATEMENT — Maria Inez Winfield, PhD.:
My art straddles the intersectionality of language and visual arts. The two are inextricably woven into the fabric
of my existence, and I encourage my audience to imagine with me. I believe my craft invites ekphrasis and hope
the words that emerge are positive motivating change agents.
For me, love, peace and joy are a conviction. I am convinced that my art and language are obligated to create
opportunities for harmony and engagements with optimism. Therefore, I consciously seek ways to express an
aesthetic of hope in my work. By this I mean that I endeavor to create love, peace and joy by design.
Most of my work is created from recycled materials such as old windows, antique mirrors and even tree bark.
Very few pieces are without some element of collage. For example, a genuine Amethyst cabochon adorns the
ear of the woman in “Avoiding Capture” and “Mary Elizabeth” wears a cultured pearl brooch. African American
women and girls with hyperbolic eyes are favorite subjects because I still believe that dark-skinned sisters are
too often underrated in a world that practices pigmentocracy. As a critical race theorist, I celebrate the often
overlooked and frequently neglected women of color as vehicle for change.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things… And the God
of peace will be with you,” (Philippians 4:8-9).
BIO:
Maria Inez Winfield earned her Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education from the University of Georgia,
Athens, a Master of Liberal Arts from Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College, Vermont, and a
Bachelor of Science in Education from the Center for Excellence in Education at Northern Arizona University,
Flagstaff. Her research agenda includes metacognitive engagements at the intersection of language and visual
arts, qualitative research methodologies, social justice, and culturally relevant pedagogy. Dr. Winfield is
frequently invited to speak at conferences locally, nationally and globally.
With a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education and a passion for art and creative writing, Dr. Winfield offers
private and small group instruction for Public Schools, Home School Families, Faith-based organizations,
national and international conferences, seminars, workshops.
