Research Means Hope
Clay Marsh, MD
Professor of Medicine
Vice Dean, Research, COM
Research Means Hope
• A coalition of concerned patients and the
physicians and researchers of America's
medical schools, teaching hospitals,
universities, research companies and
organizations.
• We believe that medical research is the
beginning of hope for everyone suffering from
serious illnesses like cancer, diabetes,
Alzheimer's, depression and Parkinson's and
the key to understanding wellness.
Traditionally, education, research, and patient care have
been seen as the tripartite missions of academic health
centers. However, it may be more useful to identify these
three features as objectives pursued to accomplish the
singular mission of the academic health center - to marry
science and medicine.
Research Mission Plan
Creating a
Culture of
Science &
Discovery
Collaborate to
advance
research
programs
Enhance the
foundation of
scientific
inquiry
Build best in
class &
innovative
infrastructure
Leverage
collaborative
resources
Retain and
grow talent
Enhance the
training of
future
biomedical
leaders

What Does This Culture Allow
Us to Do?
Longevity
• US life expectancy has increased by
about one year of longevity each six
years since 1990. A baby born today has
a life-expectancy of almost 3 decades
longer than a baby born in 1900.
http://www.researchmeanshope.org/pdf/NIH_discoveries.pdf
Heart Disease
• The death rate for coronary heart disease
is more than 60% lower and death rate
for stroke 70% lower than in World War II
era.
• Framingham heart study has changed
public health and statins, ASA and beta-
blockers changing heart disease
occurrence and outcomes.

Cancer
http://www.researchmeanshope.org/pdf/NIH_discoveries.pdf
Infectious Diseases
http://www.researchmeanshope.org/pdf/NIH_discoveries.pdf
Diabetes
http://www.researchmeanshope.org/pdf/NIH_discoveries.pdf
• 2.2% of patients with colon cancer had
evidence of Lynch syndrome
• Each year, this could lead to 11,840 patients/yr
with Lynch syndrome changing therapy and
allowing family members to be tested and if
positive screened beginning at 20-25 y.o.
• Now EGAPP recommendation to test new
colon ca patients
