1. National University of Medical Sciences Scholarships & Awards
Thanks to the generous support of many individuals and corporations; National University of
Medical Sciences (NUMSS) students can access an extensive breadth and variety of scholarships
that recognize academic and clinical excellence of deserving students. Among the more common
criteria used in determining eligibility for these awards and scholarships are academic
excellence, financial need, essay submissions, character and leadership. Here is the list of
scholarships available to NUMSS students. These scholarships and awards are available to all

National University of Medical Sciences President’s Award
Dr. Shahin Pourgol; NUMSS president presents this award to graduating students who has
obtained a high academic standing in the Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) program.
Avicenna Memorial Award
This scholarship was established by Dr. Shahin Pourgol (creator of osteopathic Sports Energy
Technique) to honour the memory of Avicenna (prince of physicians), also known as Ibn Sina, a
Persian physician and philosopher, who was one of the pioneers in the field of manual medicine.
The awards are presented to graduating students in the DO or BSc (osteopathy) programs who
complete their thesis on a topic related to the history of osteopathy.
NUMSS Entrance Scholarship
This award was established by National University of Medical Sciences to reward outstanding
academic credentials. It is granted to one student with the highest GPA in the entering class.
Professor Shahin Pourgol’s Scholarship For Chiropractors
This scholarship was established by Professor Shahin Pourgol to reward doctors of chiropractic
who pursue osteopathy education at National University of Medical Sciences. The scholarship is
granted to selected number of chiropractors accepted to NUMSS. It will be in the form of 50%
tuition credit for either the DO or BSc (Osteopathy) program.
Dr. Moin Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is presented in the memory of Mr. Ali Pourgol (teacher & author); whose
mentor was Dr. Mohamad Moin; to an Iranian student who obtains the highest academic
standing upon graduation. Dr. Mohammad Moin was born in Rasht (Iran) on July 12, 1914. He
was a prominent Iranian scholar of Persian literature and Iranology.
He obtained his BA in literature and philosophy from University of Tehran in 1934. He
subsequently went to Belgium and graduated in applied psychology, anthropology and cognitive
science under Elmer Knowles. On returning to Iran he carried out doctoral research at University
of Tehran, culminating in a thesis for which he received a PhD with honours from this University

2. in Persian literature and linguistics. He is the first doctoral graduate in Persian literature from
University of Tehran.
He is best known for his contributions to The Dehkhoda Dictionary, a work he did in
collaboration with Ali-Akbar Dehkhoda himself. Moin was President of the literature
commission of the International Congress of Iranology. He died in 1971 in Tehran. He is buried
in Astaneh Ashrafiyeh (Gilan, Iran).
Mr Pourgol named his first business after Dr Moin “Moin Translation Bureau” before going on
to set up the largest private school in the province of Gilan in Iran. Mr Pourgol was the most
prominent English teacher in Gilan and he taught 1000s of students in his career over 35 years.
Mr Pourgol encouraged his son Shahin to become a doctor and a teacher. Dr Shahin Pourgol
sites his father as the reason for his love of books and his success in the academic world. He

NUMSS National Olympian Scholarship
This scholarship, established by National University of Medical Sciences, is for a former
Olympian, recognized by the World Olympians Association, who has fulfilled the criteria for
admission to NUMSS and who has demonstrated financial need. The scholarship will be
awarded to the qualifying applicant with the highest entering GPA and will be in the form of a
50% tuition credit for any of the degree programs offered by NUMSS.
Dr. Jeanette Bolles Memorial Award
This award was established by Ms. Mahrokh Mahjouri in memory of Dr. Jeanette Bolles; the
first female osteopath. In order to encourage female students to strive for excellence, it is given
to a female National University of Medical Sciences student who has achieved the highest grade
point average upon graduation in the DO program. Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (founder of
osteopathy) was a visionary whose challenges to the status quo extended beyond the practice of
osteopathy. He was a fervent believer in extending opportunities to all a nd an early supporter of
bringing women and minorities into the profession. Dr. Still commented, "I opened wide the
doors of my first school for ladies…Why not elevate our sisters’ mentality, qualify her to fill all
places of trust and honour, place her hand and head with the skilled arts?" Few career paths were
open to women at those times. The first class to convene at the American School of Osteopathy
(ASO) in 1892-1893 included women. The number of female osteopaths rapidly increased and in
1920, women formed the Osteopathic Women’s National Association (OWNA).
