Suffering Sharpens – Suffering Shapes –
Suffering Strengthens
By Pastor Dave Hatch
Suffering keeps surprising us. We try to avoid it;
yet, often it comes without warning and despite
our efforts to avoid it. We don’t like it. But, can
we work it to our advantage? Can it teach us
something? Can it bring us to humility, an
increasing dependence on God? Can it raise us to
convictions, build endurance, develop an inner
focus on our goals and God’s deepest growth in
us?
We have talked here about suffering in previous
articles. We will talk about them again. There are
many mysteries about suffering, many ‘whys?’.
Many unanswered questions. Rather than
spinning our wheels in the mud over why, how
about revisiting the idea that the difficult
experiences of life may indeed be our best
teachers?
We will quote a few authors below. We will visit
some old thinking that can awaken us to the fact
that the troubles people have experienced and
have used to build their character can model for
us to do the same thing now.
We cannot go backwards on the timeline. We
cannot do yesterday over; we cannot skip today
and arrive at a better tomorrow today. We only
have today; we are always in our “now”. When
“now” is difficult, what are we going to do with
it?
Example One: From Alexandre Dumas’ 1840
novel, Count of Monte Cristo, we find a naïve’
prisoner in a horrible state of suffering being
visited by another seasoned prisoner. The naïve’
prisoner, Dantes, is discouraged. The seasoned
prisoner, The Abbe [French for “priest”], is
making the most of his suffering. He has turned
his prison cell into a learning place, a classroom.
In the snippet below, Dantes is fascinated with
the Abbe’s inner attitude and how he deals with
his captivity and his suffering. Let’s listen in from
the dark damp prison cell as the two converse…
"I was reflecting, in the first place,"
replied Dantes, "upon the enormous
degree of intelligence and ability you
must have employed to reach the high
perfection to which you have attained.
What would you not have accomplished if
you had been free?" "Possibly nothing at
all; the overflow of my brain would
probably, in a state of freedom, have
evaporated in a thousand follies;
misfortune is needed to bring to light the
treasures of the human intellect.
Compression is needed to explode
gunpowder. Captivity has brought my
mental faculties to a focus; and you are
well aware that from the collision of
clouds electricity is produced—from
electricity, lightning, from lightning,
illumination." "No," replied Dantes. "I
know nothing. Some of your words are to
me quite empty of meaning. You must be
blessed indeed to possess the knowledge
you have." Dumas père, Alexandre (2009

The Truth Project Returns
In the film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the story begins with Dr. Jones, a well‐known adventurer‐
archeologist, directing his college students to two vastly different classrooms. He says, “Archaeology is the
search for fact... not truth. If it's truth you're looking for, Dr. Tyree's philosophy class is right down the hall. If
you want the facts, follow me.”
Here, we want to focus on Truth.
“What is Truth?”, asked Pontius Pilate to Jesus. And that is the question of most philosophers.
For a world without Christ, truth changes with the winds of opinion, culture and perception. For the Christian,
Christ is Truth and His Word is Truth. Christ brings us unchangeable Truth.
Our Saviour will, once again, offer a special class called The Truth Project. It was created by Focus on the
Family. It is not for everyone, but it may be for you. It is for you if:
You like to learn and you would enjoy some studying at home between classes
You wish to commit to something that can have a deep stretching change in your thought‐life and world
perspective
You long to have a deep discipleship with Christ
You wish to interact with other Christians and build life‐long friendships
We will offer the classes this year on Wednesdays from 6‐8pm. The first class will be on September 11 meeting
weekly thru December 11 (no class on November 27 due to Thanksgiving).
This class is offered to members of Our Saviour and other congregations. If you would like to commit to this
class, enroll today by calling the church office at (920) 468‐4065 or sending an email to info@oslc‐gb.org. If
you want more information, visit the Truth Project website at http://www.thetruthproject.org/

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL WAS A ‘JOY’
We had 28 volunteers (13 of them youth) serving 47 children in learning to stand strong for God. Every day, the
children were learning the lesson of the day from Pastor Dave, creating a craft project or art work, building and
eating a delicious snack that followed the day’s theme and singing and dancing to specially‐themed music. “Joy,
Joy, Joy!” is easily a song that is still stuck in the head of many participants!
The Camp Luther leaders (Artemis, Classic, Flash and Greek), under the theme LIVELOVE[D], looked each day
at the theme from a different perspective with reference to 1 John 4:10‐11 (This is love: not that we loved God,
but that He loved us and sent His Son in an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we
also ought to love one another.)
VBS could not be such a success without all of our adult and youth volunteers:
Mike Charles (organizer), Louanne Kuzmic, Sam Pinchart, Melissa Beaumont, Cora Klemme,
Ariel Kuchta, Grace Smith, Carol Wolske, Amber Curtis, Jackie Behling, Pat Baneck, Deloris Siegmund,
Carol Siech, Corey Flynn, Hannah Luepke, Jaida Reynen, Norma Teske, Donna Biebel, Hunter Alft,
Becky Richer, Jeanne Heuer, Krista Groth, Tim Richter, Alexis Tilot, Taylor Steffel, Kylie Medenwald,
Kallie Medenwald and Terry Hebel.
Please thank these volunteers when you see them. They are shining examples of God’s love at work!

Our Saviour Lutheran Launching
Groundbreaking
Bible Reading Campaign
Join Thousands Nationwide Participating in The Story
The Bible is central to our faith, but many people are intimidated by its scope and size. The
Story gives us a way to journey from Genesis to Revelation together in 31 weeks so
everyone understands God’s story and how their story intersects with it.
The Bible is the best-selling book in
history, but how many people are actually
reading it? A Gallup survey reports the
average American household has four
Bibles. However, research by Pew Forum
on Religion and Public Life (2008) found
that only 16 percent of Americans read the
Bible every day.
We are hoping to reverse this trend. Your
pastors believe that The Story, a
Zondervan best-seller, is the right tool to
increase Biblical literacy, helping readers
understand God’s story from Genesis to
Revelation and how their own stories
intersect with God’s. Consisting of 31
chapters of carefully-selected scriptures
sequenced in chronological order, The
Story presents the word of God in an
engaging format, reading like a novel.
We want the people at Our Saviour, as
well as the region around us, to realize the
incredible love God has for them and how
their story is found in His story.
The Story Church Campaign is a unique
program providing up to 31 weeks of
curriculum for children, teen and adult
Sunday school and up to 31 weeks of
corresponding sermons. When
accompanied by reading through the five
age-related books (The Story, The Story:
Teen Edition, The Story for Kids, The
Story for Children, and The Story for Little
Ones), the entire church can be literally on
the same page for 31 weeks.
With thousands of participating churches
nationwide, The
Story is becoming
a movement that is
bringing wide-
ranging benefits to
local churches.
Many have
reported increased
community
outreach, increased Biblical literacy,
congregational growth and a greater
understanding of how God’s story reveals
the reasons for the things that happen in
man’s story.
YOUR INVITATION TO THE STORY
Join us and experience The Story for yourself. Come at 7:45am (before the 9:15am
service) on Sunday mornings or join us at 9:15am (after the 7:45am service/before the
10:45am service) beginning on Sunday, September 22.
