Historical Events • Tradition that was brought to US by German Immigrants • Using groundhogs instead of hedgehogs to predict the weather • First official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1886 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania • Punxsutawney is located in Western Pennsylvania, about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Political Backdrop • There are many groundhog events nationwide • Film made Punxsutawney the main groundhog day event • Possible political favoritism or at least biased for the city of Punxsutawney
