The OpenNebula Conference will be a great opportunity to communicate and share our vision and commitment, to look back at how the project has grown in the last 9 years, and to shed some insight into what to expect from the project in the near future.

Computer networks are undergoing a phenomenal growth, driven by the rapidly increasing number of nodes constituting the networks. At the same time, the number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly increasing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions require the availability of separate, test environments that best reflect the complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, and cyber security training activities, thus enabling enterprises to study cyber defense strategies and allowing security researchers to evaluate their algorithms at scale. The main objective is delivering to researchers and practitioners an overview of the technological means and the practical steps to setup a private cloud platform based on OpenNebula for the creation and management of virtual environments that support cyber-security activities of training and testing, as well as an overview of its possible applications in the cyber security domain. In particular: 1. We describe our infrastructure based on OpenNebula 2. We overview our application, sitting on top of OpenNebula, as well as the technological tools involved in the management of its lifecycle (e.g., Ansible) . 3. Containers and OpenStack Audience: Intermediate Topic: Infrastructure Abstract: Containers are the new darling of the development world, and many are calling for an end of the IaaS world. But there are still key reasons that IaaS is important even as Container based development becomes the desired path for the development community. We will review containers in the context of their growth in popularity, and look at how OpenStack both continues to support and enable Container solutions, and the latest developments in OpenStack as a containerized solution directly. Speaker Bio: Marc Van Hoof, Kumulus Marc van Hoof has been in the technology industry for over 20 years, focused on developing, deploying, and scaling internet applications. The OpenNebula Approach to Bring Open-Source to the Enterprise

OpenNebula provides a subset of the functionality offered by proprietary solutions, like VMware’s vCloud Director. This subset is enough for most infrastructure owners, and in exchange OpenNebula let’s you manage a cloud infrastructure without an army of system administrators. Because it is completely hypervisor agnostic, fully supports VMware, and is easy to install, maintain and use within existing VMware environments, OpenNebula is widely used as an open alternative to VMware vCloud at significantly lower costs. Some of our users also see OpenNebula as a migration tool that allows them to perform a smooth transition from VMware to more open hypervisor alternatives like KVM. In other words OpenNebula leverages existing VMware infrastructure, protecting IT investments, and at the same time avoids future vendor lock-in, strengthening the negotiating position of the enterprise.

Today, the model of hybrid cloud comes under the eyes of a lot of organizations. The idea of combining resources of public cloud providers with private depending on the terms of execution, the need of more resources, an extra protection of the data, more or less security in services with sensitive information, etc. are some of the capabilities that this model has to answer. The case of CSUC, acting as cloud provider and at the same time as user of external IaaS and PaaS services, is analyzed sharing its first experiences in the way to archive a real multicloud architecture to provide services for catalan universities and research institutions.

Today we gave a talk at Future Internet Assembly 2014. Its aim was to show how OpenNebula is driving innovation in cloud computing, impacting the adoption of private cloud, and enabling business in the cloud. First, most organizations adopt cloud to optimize their IT investment, to improve existing services or to support new business and service models. In this scenario, OpenNebula lowers the barriers for new organizations to build their private cloud. Second, many organizations like the fact that open source allows great customization to meet individual requirements. They can build a differentiated cloud service to meet customers needs or to offer new cloud provision models for a specific market segment or geography. Third, open-source also encourages and supports innovation in the development of new cloud products. We have seen many examples of how its use lowers the barriers for new ICT players to create their own cloud offerings.

The OpenNebula Project has come a long way since the first “technology preview” of OpenNebula almost six years ago. During these years we’ve witnessed the rise and hype of the Cloud, the birth and decline of several virtualization technologies, but specially the encouraging and exciting growth of OpenNebula; both as a technology and as an active and engaged community. As a meeting point for OpenNebula users, developers, administrators, builders, integrators and researchers, this Conference represents an opportunity to look back at how the project has grown in the last six years, and to give a peek at what to expect from the project in the near future. Bio: Ignacio M. Llorente, Ph.D and MBA, is Director of the OpenNebula Project and CEO & co-founder at C12G Labs. He is an entrepreneur and researcher in the field of cloud and distributed computing, having managed several international projects and initiatives on Cloud Computing, and authored many articles in the leading journals and proceedings books. Dr. Llorente is one of the pioneers and world’s leading authorities on Cloud Computing, having held several appointments as independent expert and consultant for the European Commission and several companies and national governments. Llorente holds a Ph.D in Computer Science (UCM) and an Executive MBA (IE Business School), and is also a Full Professor at UCM.

The presentation will describe the OpenNebula project for data center virtualization, with a focus on how to deploy OpenNebula-based private clouds and its unique features to tune and adapt it to any technology in the cloud and virtualization ecosystem. The target audience are developers and IT administrators interested in deploying a private cloud solution, or in the integration of OpenNebula with other projects. The talk will be useful for both people with experience or without prior knowledge of OpenNebula, as it will start by introducing the project and its main features, along with a quick demonstration. Although this is not a hands-on tutorial, by the end of the presentation attendees will have a comprehensive idea of the integration and customization capabilities of OpenNebula in different areas, like user authentication, virtualization, storage, networking, etc.

With businesses built around software now disrupting multiple industries that appeared to have stable leaders, the need has emerged for enterprises to create "software factories" built around the following principles: Streaming customer feedback directly into rapid, iterative cycles of application development Horizontally scaling applications to meet user demand Compatibility with an enormous diversity of clients, with mobility (smartphones, tablets, etc.) taking the lead Continuous delivery of value, shrinking the cycle time from concept to cash Infrastructure has taken the lead in adapting to meet these needs with the move to the cloud, and Platform as a Service (PaaS) has raised the level of abstraction to a focus on an ecosystem of applications and services. However, most applications are still developed as if we're living in the previous generation of both business and infrastructure: the monolithic application. Microservices - small, loosely coupled applications that follow the Unix philosophy of "doing one thing well" - represent the application development side of enabling rapid, iterative development, horizontal scale, polyglot clients, and continuous delivery. They also enable us to scale application development and eliminate long term commitments to a single technology stack. While microservices are simple, they are certainly not easy. It's recently been said that "microservices are not a free lunch". Interestingly enough, if you look at the concerns expressed here about microservices, you'll find that they are exactly the challenges that a PaaS is intended to address. So while microservices do not necessarily imply cloud (and vice versa), there is in fact a symbiotic relationship between the two, with each approach somehow compensating for the limitations of the other, much like the practices of eXtreme Programming.
