T he RDHAP is able to bring services directly to those populations by utilizing mobile dental equipment. Patients
who are no longer able to drive or are bedridden by health issues can continue to receive preventative dental
care.
Being in their own comf ortable environment can alleviate stress and anxiety f or a person. Family members are
relieved of the extra ef f ort of coordinating travel and the mobility issues that can arise by trying to access
outside care.

What is RDHAP?

In 1998 the Calif ornia Legislature created a new license category of Oral Health Prof essionals, the Registered
Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice, abbreviated as RDHAP. It allows a previously licensed dental hygienist,
who has completed the additional course studies of 150 hours and passed an additional state licensing test,
to practice dental hygiene without the direct supervision of a dentist.
6. T he purpose of this new license category was to develop a mid-level practitioner, to deliver dental hygiene care
and preventive services to special populations in alternative settings where people live or f requent, rather than
the traditional dental of f ice or clinic. T he RDHAP can be a critical bridge between dental hygiene services,
advanced therapies f or gum disease and strategies to prevent dental disease. T hey can also develop oral
health plans and provide staf f with proper training.
Registered Dental Hygienist's also have specialized training that allows them to have their own independent
business. T hey are able to provide preventative dental hygiene services to populations that otherwise would
not be ale to access dental care. Populations that f all into this category are the homebound, disabled and
those living at economic poverty levels.
