2. Front Cover:
The masthead is defying convention as
it is behind the picture but because
this issue is part of a well known
magazine it doesn’t matter as viewers
will still recognise the producers.
The background colour, behind the picture
has a sombre, gradient colouration.
Although it does not particularly make the
magazine stand out, it does make both the
picture and text stand out. The colour also
defies the magazine’s conventional style as
this magazine’s cover is known for being
bright and modern.
The central picture is surrounded
by a red, purple and blue border.
This border makes the picture of
the man stand out against the
background. It also creates a three-
dimensional effect, making the
man look as if he is sitting on top of
the page.
The cover lines on this cover contravene
against convention as they are positioned all
over the page and not just in the left third.
The black colour used for the text makes the
cover lines readable but does not make them
stand out, this could be because the producer
of this magazine felt that what the cover lines
have to say is not as important for the
consumer to see in comparison to the other
factors of the magazine.
This text has been highlighted in yellow,
which can only mean that the producers
of this magazine want the consumer to
see it first, it also linked to the picture of
the man, which means that a large
segment of this magazine revolves
around this subject. It is a factor that the
magazine will be relying on to sell that
magazine.
The producers of this magazine have
chosen to use a puff and have
decided to insert the barcode within
it. By the use of the word “plus” it
makes it seem as if this story that the
puff is related has a level of
exclusivity to it.
The picture is a medium close up and
has been tainted yellow so that it
works more effectively with the bright
border that the shot has been given.
3. Contents Page:
This contents page minimally defies
convention in the sense that the date
of this issue is not on the front cover
but on the contents page instead.
This contents page features a
gigantic picture of a pool party. The
picture has a varied amount of
different colours within it, which
makes it stand out against the black
background. Because of the colour
of the background, there is no need
for a border lining feature unlike on
the front cover. Every person in the
picture looks as if they are having
fun and couldn’t be happier to be
where they are, this image has
obviously been constructed to look
this way as it will entice the
consumer to want to be the people
in this picture or learn more about
what they are doing.
The word “Contents” is in a bold
typeface and has a white colouration,
this makes it stand out against the
background and draws the viewers
eyes towards it, which mean that
there will be no confusion as to the
purpose of this page.
The cover lines are very small on this
contents page, which does not help
them to stand out although by
colouring the text as white it
counterbalances this factor.
If this magazine was in a shop and a consumer
was flicking through the pages, trying to decide
whether to buy it over the others then this
offer of a free CD may entice the consumer to
buy this magazine over the competition.
4. Double page spread:
Puffs have been scattered
across this double page
spread and act as an
effective feature as each
one has been bought to the
forefront of the page so
that it stands out.
This picture depicts
people in a nightclub
one “The Big 3” having
a fun night. This
picture has been used
as it is a positive
advertisement for the
nightclub that is being
represented.
Big and bold text has been
used in places where
another nightclub is being
talked about. This text acts
as a title with the
description below. The font
of these titles varies
depending on the nightclub
that is in question.
The producer of this
magazine has superimposed
glowing lines over the
pictures in order to add effect
and emphasis on the fact that
the photograph was taken in
a nightclub.
The space around
important details has
been highlighted in either
a yellow or a pink colour.
This has made them out
to be label like features
and the use of the pink
and yellow make these
labels stand out.
5. Front Cover:
“Q” is the name of the magazine. This logo
incorporates the combination of the
colours, red and white. Because the “Q” is
white and the background of the logo is
red, it stands out on the page even though
it has been placed in the corner. There’s a
lot of red on this magazine cover. Red can
be a symbol for danger or a warning, but it
also catches people’s eyes and can make
people question why the cover is so bright;
this could mean that they are more likely
to pick up this particular magazine to read
it.
Apart from being another example of the
use of the colour red, this use of large font
makes it clear to the reader that whatever is
being stated is an important entity that
makes up the magazine and that the reader
may want to read the story behind the title.
It also add the premise that the magazine is
full of exclusive information.
The masthead has a big and bold
type face so that it is obvious to
the viewer what the main feature
of this magazine is.
This puff defies convention in a certain sense
as it is partly covering the picture of the lead
singer in Plan B although it does not defy it
altogether as it is not covering his face. The
shape of this puff is an unusual one as it has
been done in a banner style rather then as a
basic circle or square shape.
This barcode has been positioned in the
middle, right third which defies convention as
it is more commonly placed either in the
bottom, left or right third.
The picture in the middle is that of the
lead singer of Plan B. He is the most well-
known member of the band which Is why
he has been included as the feature. The
way he has been dressed for the picture
depicts him as if he could be anyone,
possibly someone that you could pass
while walking down the street. This is
important as the time that this magazine
was designed, was around the time that
Plan B released the album “Ill Manors”.
This album was based around London
and the riots that were occurring. If the
lead singer was dressed as an aristocrat
or as someone with money to spare then
it would go against the band’s message.
6. Contents Page:
The producers of this
magazine have used a large
type face although they
have not decided to use a
bold setting. Furthermore
they have used a serif
typeface, this causes a
maturing affect on this
contents page. This could
attract young teens who are
desperate to grow up but
are not so keen on
newspapers.
The lead singer of Plan B has
been added to this contents
page in picture form, this
links the cover page and the
contents together and adds
relevance and on which
page the reader can find the
main featuring story.
The bigger stories that
have been included in
this magazine have a
designated picture. This
is a useful design
technique as all of the
different stories on this
contents page are titled
in the same type face
colour and size. The
picture will draw the
reader’s eyes to that
story in particular.
Subscribers are important
for most magazines as it
can be a large source of
income. By advertising the
option that the audience
has to subscribe on a darker
background, makes the
advert standout on the
page. This use of a dark
background and a lighter
coloured font defies the
convention that this
magazine has decided to
follow, which is a white
background and a darker
font colour.
The way the pictures have been laid out could be
described as a neat collage style. This allow the reader to
clearly see who is in the picture but it also give the page a
certain alternative edge.
7. Double Page Spread:
This half of the double
page spread has a white
background, this is so that
it contrasts with the next
page which is full of
pictures.
The beginning of the text has an
oversized capitol “a” at the start of
the first word. This use of the
giant ‘a’ will attract the reader’s
eye to the text. This glaring letter
is a necessary touch as the other
page of this double page spread is
very busy with pictures, this could
lead to the audience who are
viewing these pages to pay no
attention to the written work that
has been placed on the left page
and to only focus on the easier to
right side.
The information that is stated on this page has been
presented in a newspaper-like way as the text has
been put into columns and the audience is supposed
to read from left to right in order to make sense of the
text.
The pictures on the
right side of the
double page spread
have been set out so
that they are in a
collage formation.
This links this page to
the contents page as
it follows the
contents pages’ style
of alternative
neatness.
This is the start of a sub
story within the article.
They have started it
with a larger, bolder
font and a quote that is
negative in order to add
effect and to draw the
reader’s attention.
This feature has been placed here in order to add little bit more information to
the article surrounding. This information will be relevant but not as important
as what has a been written in the article itself. This feature has been given a
border and shadowing in order to give the effect that it is sitting on top of the
page; its adds a 3D effect.
