SCOUTMASTER’S DILEMMA
I need your help!
Here is the problem. I have a friend who is a new scoutmaster and he is about to take a group of 25
young scouts on an eight-mile hike to a lake for an overnight camping experience next Saturday as part
of a scout competition. The route involves hiking through fairly dense woods and some rocky trail.
Unfortunately, his assistant scoutmaster will not be able to go along, so he will be the only adult present
to supervise the boys. They are scheduled to leave at 10:00 a.m. and arrive at the lake no later than 3:00
p.m. If they don’t make it by 3:00 p.m., their troop will be disqualified from the scout competition.
Here are some facts that cause him concern:
1. Some of the boys in the group naturally walk fast and others naturally slow.
2. Some of the boys are very excited by the idea of the hike and camping overnight; others are only
going because their parents are making them.
3. He is virtually certain that each boy is capable of completing the hike, but he is not at all sure that
the young man whose leg is in a cast and is on crutches can get there by 3:00 p.m.
4. Some of the boys are more physically fit and will be able to cover greater distances without resting
while others will need to rest more frequently.
5. While most of the boys are sure to be at the designated trailhead at or before 10:00 a.m., three or
four of the boys are likely to be a little late (their parents are not as responsible as they should be).
This means that the group will probably not have the full five hours to cover the eight miles.
6. If my friend places himself at the front of the line in order to set the proper pace, he’s worried that
he may leave some of the slower walkers behind. If he sets a slow enough pace to keep all the
scouts together, the faster walkers will become disgruntled, discouraged, turn on the slow walkers,
and when they get home, probably complain to their parents that hiking is boring.
7. If the scoutmaster places himself at the rear of the line to be sure that no scout is left behind, he’s
worried that the fast walkers will set too fast a pace, get way out ahead, wander off and get lost,
     but—technically—not left behind.
8. The scoutmaster knows that he is going to be held liable for each scout and that it really doesn’t
matter whether a scout is lost because he was left behind or because he wandered off in boredom
     and frustration.
Faced with this dilemma, my friend began to doubt that he was cutout to be a scoutmaster. He insisted
that he was willing to work hard at the task, but really didn’t know what to do.
How would you advise the scoutmaster conduct himself? How would you suggest that the scoutmaster
set-up a cross-county hiking system that will assure that all 25 scouts arrive at the lake by 3:00 p.m.?
Climate of High Expectations for Success
Aim: In the effective school, staff believes and demonstrates that all students can master the essential school skills and
that they have the ability to help all students attain that mastery.

Sub system to create the aim: Talk about the metrics (the domain where evidence is found) for monitoring and assessing

a high percentage of this time, students are engaged in whole-class or large-group, planned, teacher-directed
     learning activities.

The Enduring Fundamentals of Effective Schools: The Correlates-activity

  • 1. THE ENDURING FUNDAMENTALS EFFECTIVE SCHOOLS: OF THE CORRELATES PREPARED BY LAWRENCE W. LEZOTTE Effective Schools • PO Box 1337 • Okemos, MI 48805-1337 517-349-8841 • www.effectiveschools.com
  • 2. SCOUTMASTER’S DILEMMA I need your help! Here is the problem. I have a friend who is a new scoutmaster and he is about to take a group of 25 young scouts on an eight-mile hike to a lake for an overnight camping experience next Saturday as part of a scout competition. The route involves hiking through fairly dense woods and some rocky trail. Unfortunately, his assistant scoutmaster will not be able to go along, so he will be the only adult present to supervise the boys. They are scheduled to leave at 10:00 a.m. and arrive at the lake no later than 3:00 p.m. If they don’t make it by 3:00 p.m., their troop will be disqualified from the scout competition. Here are some facts that cause him concern: 1. Some of the boys in the group naturally walk fast and others naturally slow. 2. Some of the boys are very excited by the idea of the hike and camping overnight; others are only going because their parents are making them. 3. He is virtually certain that each boy is capable of completing the hike, but he is not at all sure that the young man whose leg is in a cast and is on crutches can get there by 3:00 p.m. 4. Some of the boys are more physically fit and will be able to cover greater distances without resting while others will need to rest more frequently. 5. While most of the boys are sure to be at the designated trailhead at or before 10:00 a.m., three or four of the boys are likely to be a little late (their parents are not as responsible as they should be). This means that the group will probably not have the full five hours to cover the eight miles. 6. If my friend places himself at the front of the line in order to set the proper pace, he’s worried that he may leave some of the slower walkers behind. If he sets a slow enough pace to keep all the scouts together, the faster walkers will become disgruntled, discouraged, turn on the slow walkers, and when they get home, probably complain to their parents that hiking is boring. 7. If the scoutmaster places himself at the rear of the line to be sure that no scout is left behind, he’s worried that the fast walkers will set too fast a pace, get way out ahead, wander off and get lost, but—technically—not left behind. 8. The scoutmaster knows that he is going to be held liable for each scout and that it really doesn’t matter whether a scout is lost because he was left behind or because he wandered off in boredom and frustration. Faced with this dilemma, my friend began to doubt that he was cutout to be a scoutmaster. He insisted that he was willing to work hard at the task, but really didn’t know what to do. How would you advise the scoutmaster conduct himself? How would you suggest that the scoutmaster set-up a cross-county hiking system that will assure that all 25 scouts arrive at the lake by 3:00 p.m.?
