Description
The challenge for the 2008 ASID Student
Design Competition called on students to
develop a design for a luxury skybox. The
client is the CEO of major music recording
company and would use the skybox for the
company"s recording artists when they are
in town. Students were instructed to
custom-design the skybox that incorporated
the company‟s logo, brand, and aspects of
the company‟s musical style.
Sinless Massacre Studios was founded in the
early „90s as a sister company to Virgin
Records. Sinless Massacre was established
during this time to both give heavy metal
and rock bands another label option to
record under as well as give the metal genre
a less fearsome image. Sinless Massacre
provides exactly what the name says. You
are sure to be impressed with the music that
is produced by this studio but just remember
that no matter how heavy it
gets...it‟s just music, no harm done.

Author’s Cottage
Residential Interior Design
Spring 2009
Description
Theo R. Stanford, a well known author from
the hills of Tennessee has recently purchased
an acre of land that sits in one of the
beautiful, tree filled valleys. A small river runs
through the area and his wish is to establish
the site of his “writing cottage” close to its
banks.
Mr. Stanford is very conscientious of the
natural environment and wishes to maintain
as much of the surroundings as possible. By
doing so, using sustainable or recycled
materials for interior finishes and the
construction process is a must. The final
product is a one bedroom cottage that
incorporates a small, yet functional office
space for his writings. This cottage is created
using straw bale construction methods and
a minimum of 85% sustainable materials.
Floorplans, elevations and detail drawings
were all completed using hand drafting
methods.

2 or 3 string bales: A
straw bale wall built with
three-string bales (tight
construction-grade bales are
typically 16" x 23" x 46") will
produce a super-insulated
wall of R-50. That's two to
three times more insulation
than most kinds of new
construction, without the
environmental hazards of
formaldehyde-laced
fiberglass. Straw bale walls
are highly fire-resistant
because, with stucco on
each side of the wall, there is
too little oxygen Inside to
support combustion. Even
without stucco protection,
burn-through times greatly
exceed building code
requirements. Two-string
bales can be used for
construction if they are
sufficiently compacted.
But they are smaller in
size, have a lower
insulation rating, and
do not have the
structural strength of
three-string bales.
Good, tight,
three-string bales are
really preferable.
Construction: Modern load
-bearing, plastered straw
bale wall construction goes
like this: a concrete slab is
poured with short pieces of
rebar (metal
concrete-reinforcement
rods) sticking out of the
concrete about 12 inches
high on 2-foot centers
around the slab perimeter.
After waterproofing the top
of the foundation, the
bottom bales of the wall are
wrapped with a
polyethylene sheet (to
prevent moisture migration
from below) and impaled on
the rebar. Subsequent bales
are stacked on this bottom
layer like bricks, with each
new layer of bales offset by
half over the bales below.
Rebar pieces are driven into
selected bale layers pinning
them to the bales below.
Plumbing is generally placed
in interior frame walls.
Electrical wiring is done on
(or recessed into) the bales
after the wall is up. Electrical
outlet boxes are attached to
wooden stakes driven into
the bales.
Preassembled window and door frames
are set in place as the walls are
constructed. The frames are then pinned to
the surrounding bales with dowels to hold
them in place before the stucco is applied.
When the walls are finished and have
completely compressed under the weight
of the finished roof and ceiling for six weeks
or so, the bales are wrapped with stucco
mesh or chicken wire. Stucco is then
troweled onto the wire, coating the walls
inside and out. Plaster can be used on
Interior walls if desired.
This forms a bug-proof,
fire-resistant envelope
around the straw, and
securely attaches the
electrical
fixtures to the wall.
Typical straw bale
construction. Like
bricks, only bigger. A
large roof overhang
and gutters help keep
rain off the exterior
walls and lessen the
possibility of moisture
migration. Straw bales
can take some
moisture on the ex-
posed bale-ends,
since the gaps
between the straws
are too big for
capillary action to
carry moisture into the
bale. Of course,
painting the stucco
also goes a long way
toward keeping the
bales dry. If the bales
are kept dry the
building will last for
many decades.
Typical Bale Sizes: A
three-string bale is typically
16”x23”x46” bales typically
weigh between 50 and 90
pounds.
Cost: $2-$4 dollars a bale. A
typical 2,000 square foot house
typically requires 350 bales.
Miscellaneous: The wall
system for a whole building
can be stacked in just a
day or two.
Modern straw bale
buildings first appeared
shortly after the invention
of mechanical baling
equipment in the late
1800s. Pioneers in the
timber-poor regions of
Nebraska started using
bales as expedient
short-term shelters. When
these temporary structures
turned out to be both
durable and comfortable
in the extremes of
Nebraska weather, they
were soon plastered and
adopted as permanent
housing.
Insulation: Straw bales offer excellent
insulation. At R 2.7 per inch, an
eighteen-inch wide bale equals R-48-R-50
(a measure of the resistance to heat loss)
One California study indicated that such
a “super-insulated” straw bale home
could save as much as 75% of heating
and cooling costs! This translates to direct
dollar savings for the homeowner, and a
corresponding reduction in the use of
fossil fuels and CO2 emissions.
Concerns/Fire Resistence:
Common questions about
straw bale homes include
concerns about fire, moisture,
and insects. While individual
stalks of straw will burn, when
condensed into bales, they
actually resist combustion, due
to lack of oxygen. It‟s like trying
to burn a phone book. At a
certified laboratory in New
Mexico, a plastered straw bale
wall system easily passed a
two-hour fire test, which is
required for commercial
construction. Liquid moisture is
a problem in bale walls, as it is
in any wall system. But with a
proper foundation, roof, and
finish plaster, straw bale
buildings can last indefinitely,
as nearly century-old homes in
Nebraska prove. Anecdotal
evidence indicates no
problem with bugs.
Building codes have been developed for both “post and
beam” and load-bearing straw bale construction. In New
Mexico, Pima County, AZ, and several counties in
California, getting a building permit for a straw bale
house is almost routine. Farmers Insurance Group will
insure a bale home at preferred rates and other
companies are following suit. And straw bale houses are
gaining acceptance with Fannie Mae and HUD.
A number of these 80- to
90-year-old buildings are
still standing and in good
repair.
Bales can also be bent in
the center to form curved
walls, and interesting
Insets and artwork can
easily be carved into the
straw before the stucco is
applied.

Pepper’s Ranch
Residential Interior Design
Spring 2009
Description
Pepper‟s Ranch is a boy‟s home requiring
many special considerations in both
research and implementation of design.
During client interviews, special needs such
as additional ADA consideration throughout
the space were brought to light. Design
intent was based on client interviews
considering the desires of all clients involved
and keeping within codes and constraints
required of such a space. Consideration was
given to both the house parents wishes and
those of the boys to make this space
enjoyable and livable to all inhabitants.
Inspiration for this project began with the
Phoenix, a mythical creature known for its
ability to create a new life for itself by rising
again from the ashes of its previous body.
The main focus of the design was to reflect a
fresh start by using the Phoenix as initial
inspiration in both color scheme and
orientation. The shape of the floor plan was
intended to mimic the whiplash curves and
oddly jutting angles of the phoenix tail
feathers. The color scheme of interior finishes
also were intended to resemble that of a
phoenix tail. As the project developed
however, it was discovered that the phoenix
was too specific a creature to build an entire
house around. The design and accessories in
turn began to develop into what resembles
an African safari while still keeping within the
initial red and orange color scheme inspired
by the phoenix.

Process
Program:
Peppers Ranch is a residential boy's
community providing a disciplined
environment in which we challenge
and encourage the development of
responsible behavioral skills, academic
standards, social discipline, spiritual
principles, and physical activity. Each
year, Peppers Ranch accepts boys
from all ethnic, cultural, geographic
and socio-economic backgrounds
between the ages of 5 and 15 at
admission. Often they are victims of
severe physical, emotional and sexual
abuse, compounded by medical and
psychiatric problems. Many come from
broken, dysfunctional homes,
or feel isolated and
unaccepted in their homes,
schools and communities. Yet,
despite their pain and
hardships, these boys are
remarkably talented and
resilient.
Renew
Vision:
It is the goal of Peppers Ranch to
become home to forty boys and their
house parents. The Ranch will provide
independent living apartments for our
high school graduates. State licensing
precludes 18-year-olds from living in the
same home with younger children…
they've "aged out" of state custody, yet
few are ready to "graduate" into the
adult world. Imagine the feeling of
hope and security it gives a child to
know that someone will be there for
them throughout their lives.

Mission:
Through shelter, counseling, and growth-oriented activities, Peppers
Ranch seeks to "break the cycle" of child abuse and neglect. By
creating a network of caring, supportive adults on whom children can
depend, Peppers Ranch is committed to providing quality care and a
safe environment where physical and emotional wounds can heal.

Airbus A380
Commercial Design I
Fall 2009
Description
Design of an Airbus A380 for a Saudi Arabian Prince
and his family.
Public areas and private family areas are drastically
different in all aspects, including color schemes, size
and comfort of the space, and quality of textiles
used. Purple, being the popular color to symbolize
royalty is visible in all public areas as to remind all
guests that they are in the presence of a diplomat.
Lime green was selected as an accent to the purple
both to offset the dark shades and shadows created
by a deep purple color and to represent the forward
mindset of the Saudi Arabian people. Utilizing a
trendy color combination displays the wealth and
ability of the country to remain up-to-date in all
trends. Public areas such as the reception area, guest
and administrative assistants‟ office and bedroom as
well as the flight/security lounges on each level are
spacious and grandiose. Ample square footage is
provided in order to prevent a claustrophobic
atmosphere. Western type furnishings such as sofas
and oversized chairs are provided in public areas due
to the international business goings on in the business
offices of the Airbus. Plush and opulent textiles are
utilized providing all guests the opportunity to
experience just what it means to be pampered
alongside the world‟s elite.
Hues of crimson and gold are apparent in all private
family portions of the airbus. Crimson being a warm
color creates a sense of comfort within the protection
of family dwellings and gold being sumptuous
provides a constant reminder that family is still a
hierarchical unit where respect is both demanded
and observed by all members. All family areas are
allotted less square footage per room remembering
that Saudi Arabian families, no matter their
diplomatic stature, prefer that family remain a close
unit always able to join together within the
confines of the home. Furnishings are sparse within
the family zones, mostly comprised of benches and
oversized floor pillows because the Saudi Arabian
culture prefers not to utilize cumbersome furnishings
that seat very few people. Black and white flooring is
present in all family zones to provide additional royal
symbolism, meaning that the royal family and only
distinguished guests may enter.
Symbolism is present in all aspects of the
design and careful consideration was given to the
culture and society of the Saudi
Arabian people.

Curtains are used extensively, both to separate spaces (the male and female domain) as well
as to conceal storage spaces. Heavy curtains will be present throughout the aircraft.
Most families prefer to sit or lay on the floor in family spaces, they do not prefer large furniture
pieces in family and living rooms. Family areas will be minimally furnished with large rugs and

Harbor House Youth Shelter
Commercial
Design I
Fall 2009
Description
The 2009 Student Design Competition called on
students to create a residential and commercial space
for at-risk youths ages 10-17 who are in crisis. The Harbor
House Youth Shelter provides short-term housing along
with a healing and rehabilitating environment 24 hours a
day, seven days a week at no cost to runaway, homeless,
and abused youths. In addition to the residential space,
the shelter also house a sandwich/deli shop operated by
the shelter occupants that is open to the public.
To be “whole” is to be not broken, damaged or
impaired. When speaking of human nature, it pertains to
all aspects, one's physical, intellectual, and spiritual
development.
Design of the Harbor House youth shelter is centered on
the acronym W.H.O.L.E. Wellness, being a
consideration because above all, the design is to
promote the physical and mental well being of all
inhabitants, ensuring that a safe and healthy environment
is present at all times.
Residents of the Harbor House facilities are in desperate
need of a home. Whatever circumstances brought
residents to the facilities, judgment will not be passed and
they will be given the opportunity to live in a homelike
environment until the time they desire to renounce
permanent residence and live on their own.
One main concept of the Harbor House facilities is to
provide youth an opportunity to better their
circumstance, living situation, and future lifestyle. For this
reason, the facilities include an in house sub shop that
provides residents a place to gain crucial work and social
experience.
The “Whole in the Wall” sub shop is used as a means of
allowing residents to touch the community. While the
main entrance to the sub shop is located in the alley
around the back of the building, guests will be able to
enter a community of people they see every day in the
work place or on the street. Design accommodates locals
and allows for long periods of time spent studying or
hanging out within the shop.
Residents of the Pearl district in Portland tend to
prefer organic, and sustainable products. Many of the
buildings in the district are undergoing renovations with an
urge toward LEED certification. Keeping that in mind,
mainly eco-friendly and sustainable products were
selected for the design.

Second Floor:
As a means of providing privacy to the residents while ensuring that staff has the ability to supervise the space, residence
room walls are 8 feet high, just short of the finished ceiling.
Doors are omitted from residence rooms, incorporating hallways as entrances.
Drugs must be locked away in a secure separate room to which residents can only gain access in the presence of staff.
Lockers are available with access only allowed in the presence of staff.
Personal items need to be available at night but stored away in the daytime. Residence rooms have ample storage space
for personal belongings.
Cabinets and closets need to be accessible frequently but still securable. Cabinets are available to the resident but
lockable.
Managing keys is a hassle and residents feel locks can be picked and that staff may have keys to access personal
belongings. Pad locks are used to lock away all personal belongings.
First Floor:
The homeless want an open and public space. The reception area is an open space
utilizing half walls and glazing.
Homeless want to be able to look around, to see other people, and to understand what
lies beyond the lobby. Visual access over half walls is allowed in order to view
people working in office spaces.
A large counter staffed by more than one person suggests that the facility is well
managed. A large reception desk is visible and employees at work in offices are
visible over half walls.
Some facilities may have a coatroom much like one present at a museum. Visitors can
check a bag or duffel for the day avoiding the need to carry belongings around all
day. Storage is available in mentoring rooms.
RESEARCH NOTES
Lighting:
In keeping with the urban
design of the Whole in the
Wall Sub shop, an open
grid was selected as the
mounting for all ceiling
fixtures. The switching and
electrical wiring runs
through conduit attached
to and concealed by the
T-bar.
Spaces require ample ambient
lighting, at night they need
to be sufficiently
illuminated to enable
people to navigate among
them without intruding on
other residents’ ability to
get sleep. Emergency
lighting is incorporated into
the hallways and the
individual residents control
lighting in residence rooms.
Ceiling lighting is efficient but
likely to seem institutional,
wall lighting is a good
alternative. Wall sconces
are present in the design

Maracana Stadium Annex
Commercial Design II
Spring 2010
Description
The Federation of International Football Associations
(FIFA) has selected Brazil to host the 2014 World Cup.
FIFA will be moving a management team to Rio de
Janerio to work with the Brazilian Football
Confederation (CBF) to organize the international
tournament.
The project is to design the facilities to be located in
the circular flat-dome annex to the Maracanã
Stadium. This is a four-story building that has been
gutted and ready for the renovation.
The ground floor lobby is used for receptions with
food and drink service provided by a café. A
bookstore is dedicated to literature, videos and
Posters. The café provides lunch service for the public
visiting the museum, bookstore, and retail shop. It also
caters luncheon meetings for the offices and evening
receptions. The retail shop is a popular pre-game and
post-game stop for souvenirs and sports
paraphernalia.
The first floor houses a football museum displaying
trophies and photographs as well as video clips of
games. There is a tribute to top football personalities
with a fame wall and display cases with items of
clothing and autographed soccer balls. There is an
area for purchasing tickets and a business office for
scheduling tours and basic business activities. The
permanent exhibit receives a steady stream of fans.
The temporary exhibits are geared to current events
and activities. A reception area serves as a meeting
area for dignitaries and patrons who sponsor the
temporary exhibits. The opening night events are
catered by the café with close access to the
elevators.
The second floor contains the nerve center with
general offices, meeting room and committee
facilities. This is a very busy, active area where
networking and communication is paramount.
The third floor houses the executive offices for the
World Cup liaisons between the international
federation and the country association. FIFA and
CBF-LOC offices are integrated to provide maximum
efficiency in space planning and organizational
management
The World Cup 2014 logo sets the stage for the interior
design and interior architecture of the stadium annex.
The design theories of the Brazilian interior designer/
architect, Oscar Niemeyer (will serve as the design
concept for the selection of fixtures, furnishings and
equipment.
CONCEPT STATEMENT
Design of the Annex to the Maracaña Stadium is centered on the acronym
F.I.F.A. both in honor of the client as well as the four main points met by the
design.
With inspiration for the design being taken from Brazilian architect Oscar
Niemeyer, and the Brazil 2014 logo, design of the annex will be flamboyant in
nature. Through the use of vibrant color schemes and obvious focal points, the
annex will achieve flashiness enough to excite all inhabitants about the
activities that brought them there.
Design of the annex required intricate thought in the space planning and
layout of the interior space. The intertwining of primary office spaces used for
both FIFA and the Local organizations and the curvature of the space itself
involved extra consideration in space planning and appropriate adjacencies.
One main consideration for the annex is function for all users. Design meets all
codes and constraints for this type of space making it accessible for users of all
shapes and sizes. One primary mode of achieving this access is through
wayfinding systems of various types within the space.
Another consideration within the space is education through the museum
portions of the annex. The museums and interactive display units are used as a
means of providing an academic experience in addition to the recreational
purposes of the space.

Fall 2010

  • 11. Residential Interior Design Spring 2009 Description Theo R. Stanford, a well known author from the hills of Tennessee has recently purchased an acre of land that sits in one of the beautiful, tree filled valleys. A small river runs through the area and his wish is to establish the site of his “writing cottage” close to its banks. Mr. Stanford is very conscientious of the natural environment and wishes to maintain as much of the surroundings as possible. By doing so, using sustainable or recycled materials for interior finishes and the construction process is a must. The final product is a one bedroom cottage that incorporates a small, yet functional office space for his writings. This cottage is created using straw bale construction methods and a minimum of 85% sustainable materials. Floorplans, elevations and detail drawings were all completed using hand drafting methods. (Inspiration photo found using Yahoo! Image search)
  • 12. Research 2 or 3 string bales: A straw bale wall built with three-string bales (tight construction-grade bales are typically 16" x 23" x 46") will produce a super-insulated wall of R-50. That's two to three times more insulation than most kinds of new construction, without the environmental hazards of formaldehyde-laced fiberglass. Straw bale walls are highly fire-resistant because, with stucco on each side of the wall, there is too little oxygen Inside to support combustion. Even without stucco protection, burn-through times greatly exceed building code requirements. Two-string bales can be used for construction if they are sufficiently compacted. But they are smaller in size, have a lower insulation rating, and do not have the structural strength of three-string bales. Good, tight, three-string bales are really preferable. Construction: Modern load -bearing, plastered straw bale wall construction goes like this: a concrete slab is poured with short pieces of rebar (metal concrete-reinforcement rods) sticking out of the concrete about 12 inches high on 2-foot centers around the slab perimeter. After waterproofing the top of the foundation, the bottom bales of the wall are wrapped with a polyethylene sheet (to prevent moisture migration from below) and impaled on the rebar. Subsequent bales are stacked on this bottom layer like bricks, with each new layer of bales offset by half over the bales below. Rebar pieces are driven into selected bale layers pinning them to the bales below. Plumbing is generally placed in interior frame walls. Electrical wiring is done on (or recessed into) the bales after the wall is up. Electrical outlet boxes are attached to wooden stakes driven into the bales. Preassembled window and door frames are set in place as the walls are constructed. The frames are then pinned to the surrounding bales with dowels to hold them in place before the stucco is applied. When the walls are finished and have completely compressed under the weight of the finished roof and ceiling for six weeks or so, the bales are wrapped with stucco mesh or chicken wire. Stucco is then troweled onto the wire, coating the walls inside and out. Plaster can be used on Interior walls if desired. This forms a bug-proof, fire-resistant envelope around the straw, and securely attaches the electrical fixtures to the wall. Typical straw bale construction. Like bricks, only bigger. A large roof overhang and gutters help keep rain off the exterior walls and lessen the possibility of moisture migration. Straw bales can take some moisture on the ex- posed bale-ends, since the gaps between the straws are too big for capillary action to carry moisture into the bale. Of course, painting the stucco also goes a long way toward keeping the bales dry. If the bales are kept dry the building will last for many decades. Typical Bale Sizes: A three-string bale is typically 16”x23”x46” bales typically weigh between 50 and 90 pounds. Cost: $2-$4 dollars a bale. A typical 2,000 square foot house typically requires 350 bales.
  • 13. Miscellaneous: The wall system for a whole building can be stacked in just a day or two. Modern straw bale buildings first appeared shortly after the invention of mechanical baling equipment in the late 1800s. Pioneers in the timber-poor regions of Nebraska started using bales as expedient short-term shelters. When these temporary structures turned out to be both durable and comfortable in the extremes of Nebraska weather, they were soon plastered and adopted as permanent housing. Insulation: Straw bales offer excellent insulation. At R 2.7 per inch, an eighteen-inch wide bale equals R-48-R-50 (a measure of the resistance to heat loss) One California study indicated that such a “super-insulated” straw bale home could save as much as 75% of heating and cooling costs! This translates to direct dollar savings for the homeowner, and a corresponding reduction in the use of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions. Concerns/Fire Resistence: Common questions about straw bale homes include concerns about fire, moisture, and insects. While individual stalks of straw will burn, when condensed into bales, they actually resist combustion, due to lack of oxygen. It‟s like trying to burn a phone book. At a certified laboratory in New Mexico, a plastered straw bale wall system easily passed a two-hour fire test, which is required for commercial construction. Liquid moisture is a problem in bale walls, as it is in any wall system. But with a proper foundation, roof, and finish plaster, straw bale buildings can last indefinitely, as nearly century-old homes in Nebraska prove. Anecdotal evidence indicates no problem with bugs. Building codes have been developed for both “post and beam” and load-bearing straw bale construction. In New Mexico, Pima County, AZ, and several counties in California, getting a building permit for a straw bale house is almost routine. Farmers Insurance Group will insure a bale home at preferred rates and other companies are following suit. And straw bale houses are gaining acceptance with Fannie Mae and HUD. A number of these 80- to 90-year-old buildings are still standing and in good repair. Bales can also be bent in the center to form curved walls, and interesting Insets and artwork can easily be carved into the straw before the stucco is applied.

  • 19. Residential Interior Design Spring 2009 Description Pepper‟s Ranch is a boy‟s home requiring many special considerations in both research and implementation of design. During client interviews, special needs such as additional ADA consideration throughout the space were brought to light. Design intent was based on client interviews considering the desires of all clients involved and keeping within codes and constraints required of such a space. Consideration was given to both the house parents wishes and those of the boys to make this space enjoyable and livable to all inhabitants. Inspiration for this project began with the Phoenix, a mythical creature known for its ability to create a new life for itself by rising again from the ashes of its previous body. The main focus of the design was to reflect a fresh start by using the Phoenix as initial inspiration in both color scheme and orientation. The shape of the floor plan was intended to mimic the whiplash curves and oddly jutting angles of the phoenix tail feathers. The color scheme of interior finishes also were intended to resemble that of a phoenix tail. As the project developed however, it was discovered that the phoenix was too specific a creature to build an entire house around. The design and accessories in turn began to develop into what resembles an African safari while still keeping within the initial red and orange color scheme inspired by the phoenix. (Inspiration photo retrieved from the Pepper‟s Ranch website)
  • 20. Process Program: Peppers Ranch is a residential boy's community providing a disciplined environment in which we challenge and encourage the development of responsible behavioral skills, academic standards, social discipline, spiritual principles, and physical activity. Each year, Peppers Ranch accepts boys from all ethnic, cultural, geographic and socio-economic backgrounds between the ages of 5 and 15 at admission. Often they are victims of severe physical, emotional and sexual abuse, compounded by medical and psychiatric problems. Many come from broken, dysfunctional homes, or feel isolated and unaccepted in their homes, schools and communities. Yet, despite their pain and hardships, these boys are remarkably talented and resilient. Renew Vision: It is the goal of Peppers Ranch to become home to forty boys and their house parents. The Ranch will provide independent living apartments for our high school graduates. State licensing precludes 18-year-olds from living in the same home with younger children… they've "aged out" of state custody, yet few are ready to "graduate" into the adult world. Imagine the feeling of hope and security it gives a child to know that someone will be there for them throughout their lives. (Information retrieved from the Pepper‟s Ranch website) Refresh Mission: Through shelter, counseling, and growth-oriented activities, Peppers Ranch seeks to "break the cycle" of child abuse and neglect. By creating a network of caring, supportive adults on whom children can depend, Peppers Ranch is committed to providing quality care and a safe environment where physical and emotional wounds can heal. • 25. Commercial Design I Fall 2009 Description Design of an Airbus A380 for a Saudi Arabian Prince and his family. Public areas and private family areas are drastically different in all aspects, including color schemes, size and comfort of the space, and quality of textiles used. Purple, being the popular color to symbolize royalty is visible in all public areas as to remind all guests that they are in the presence of a diplomat. Lime green was selected as an accent to the purple both to offset the dark shades and shadows created by a deep purple color and to represent the forward mindset of the Saudi Arabian people. Utilizing a trendy color combination displays the wealth and ability of the country to remain up-to-date in all trends. Public areas such as the reception area, guest and administrative assistants‟ office and bedroom as well as the flight/security lounges on each level are spacious and grandiose. Ample square footage is provided in order to prevent a claustrophobic atmosphere. Western type furnishings such as sofas and oversized chairs are provided in public areas due to the international business goings on in the business offices of the Airbus. Plush and opulent textiles are utilized providing all guests the opportunity to experience just what it means to be pampered alongside the world‟s elite. Hues of crimson and gold are apparent in all private family portions of the airbus. Crimson being a warm color creates a sense of comfort within the protection of family dwellings and gold being sumptuous provides a constant reminder that family is still a hierarchical unit where respect is both demanded and observed by all members. All family areas are allotted less square footage per room remembering that Saudi Arabian families, no matter their diplomatic stature, prefer that family remain a close unit always able to join together within the confines of the home. Furnishings are sparse within the family zones, mostly comprised of benches and oversized floor pillows because the Saudi Arabian culture prefers not to utilize cumbersome furnishings that seat very few people. Black and white flooring is present in all family zones to provide additional royal symbolism, meaning that the royal family and only distinguished guests may enter. Symbolism is present in all aspects of the design and careful consideration was given to the culture and society of the Saudi Arabian people.

  • 29. Resource: “Arab-American Muslims‟ Home Interiors in the US: Meanings, Uses and Communication” Privacy is of great importance, especially within the home. All areas will be separated by walls, barriers, and heavy curtains to ensure privacy is available. Curtains are used extensively, both to separate spaces (the male and female domain) as well as to conceal storage spaces. Heavy curtains will be present throughout the aircraft. Most families prefer to sit or lay on the floor in family spaces, they do not prefer large furniture pieces in family and living rooms. Family areas will be minimally furnished with large rugs and oversized tables for lounging. In the Arabic culture it is not permissible to hang photos of human beings. No photos of human being will be present in the aircraft. High-income families display generic sculptures and large potted plants. The design will be fitted for a high-income family with large potted plants and contemporary accessories. No religious artifacts will be displayed. Preference is given to the guest. A guest bedroom or reception area will be more highly decorated than the children‟s bedrooms or living spaces. The guest bedroom and reception areas will be highly decorated (more so than children‟s bedrooms and living areas) with special attention to details. MiddleEastern Families Family Areas
  • 31. Commercial Design I Fall 2009 Description The 2009 Student Design Competition called on students to create a residential and commercial space for at-risk youths ages 10-17 who are in crisis. The Harbor House Youth Shelter provides short-term housing along with a healing and rehabilitating environment 24 hours a day, seven days a week at no cost to runaway, homeless, and abused youths. In addition to the residential space, the shelter also house a sandwich/deli shop operated by the shelter occupants that is open to the public. To be “whole” is to be not broken, damaged or impaired. When speaking of human nature, it pertains to all aspects, one's physical, intellectual, and spiritual development. Design of the Harbor House youth shelter is centered on the acronym W.H.O.L.E. Wellness, being a consideration because above all, the design is to promote the physical and mental well being of all inhabitants, ensuring that a safe and healthy environment is present at all times. Residents of the Harbor House facilities are in desperate need of a home. Whatever circumstances brought residents to the facilities, judgment will not be passed and they will be given the opportunity to live in a homelike environment until the time they desire to renounce permanent residence and live on their own. One main concept of the Harbor House facilities is to provide youth an opportunity to better their circumstance, living situation, and future lifestyle. For this reason, the facilities include an in house sub shop that provides residents a place to gain crucial work and social experience. The “Whole in the Wall” sub shop is used as a means of allowing residents to touch the community. While the main entrance to the sub shop is located in the alley around the back of the building, guests will be able to enter a community of people they see every day in the work place or on the street. Design accommodates locals and allows for long periods of time spent studying or hanging out within the shop. Residents of the Pearl district in Portland tend to prefer organic, and sustainable products. Many of the buildings in the district are undergoing renovations with an urge toward LEED certification. Keeping that in mind, mainly eco-friendly and sustainable products were selected for the design.

  • 34. Second Floor: As a means of providing privacy to the residents while ensuring that staff has the ability to supervise the space, residence room walls are 8 feet high, just short of the finished ceiling. Residence rooms have ample storage space for personal belongings. Cabinets and closets need to be accessible frequently but still securable. Cabinets are available to the resident but lockable. Managing keys is a hassle and residents feel locks can be picked and that staff may have keys to access personal belongings. Pad locks are used to lock away all personal belongings. First Floor: The homeless want an open and public space. The reception area is an open space utilizing half walls and glazing. Homeless want to be able to look around, to see other people, and to understand what lies beyond the lobby. Visual access over half walls is allowed in order to view people working in office spaces. A large counter staffed by more than one person suggests that the facility is well managed. A large reception desk is visible and employees at work in offices are visible over half walls. Some facilities may have a coatroom much like one present at a museum. Visitors can check a bag or duffel for the day avoiding the need to carry belongings around all day. Storage is available in mentoring rooms. RESEARCH NOTES Lighting: In keeping with the urban design of the Whole in the Wall Sub shop, an open grid was selected as the mounting for all ceiling fixtures. The switching and electrical wiring runs through conduit attached to and concealed by the T-bar. Spaces require ample ambient lighting, at night they need to be sufficiently illuminated to enable people to navigate among them without intruding on other residents’ ability to get sleep. Emergency lighting is incorporated into the hallways and the individual residents control lighting in residence rooms. Ceiling lighting is efficient but likely to seem institutional, wall lighting is a good alternative. • 39. Commercial Design II Spring 2010 Description The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) has selected Brazil to host the 2014 World Cup. FIFA will be moving a management team to Rio de Janerio to work with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to organize the international tournament. The project is to design the facilities to be located in the circular flat-dome annex to the Maracanã Stadium. This is a four-story building that has been gutted and ready for the renovation. The ground floor lobby is used for receptions with food and drink service provided by a café. A bookstore is dedicated to literature, videos and Posters. The café provides lunch service for the public visiting the museum, bookstore, and retail shop. It also caters luncheon meetings for the offices and evening receptions. The retail shop is a popular pre-game and post-game stop for souvenirs and sports paraphernalia. The first floor houses a football museum displaying trophies and photographs as well as video clips of games. There is a tribute to top football personalities with a fame wall and display cases with items of clothing and autographed soccer balls. There is an area for purchasing tickets and a business office for scheduling tours and basic business activities. The permanent exhibit receives a steady stream of fans. The temporary exhibits are geared to current events and activities. A reception area serves as a meeting area for dignitaries and patrons who sponsor the temporary exhibits. The opening night events are catered by the café with close access to the elevators. The second floor contains the nerve center with general offices, meeting room and committee facilities. This is a very busy, active area where networking and communication is paramount. The third floor houses the executive offices for the World Cup liaisons between the international federation and the country association. FIFA and CBF-LOC offices are integrated to provide maximum efficiency in space planning and organizational management The World Cup 2014 logo sets the stage for the interior design and interior architecture of the stadium annex. The design theories of the Brazilian interior designer/ architect, Oscar Niemeyer (will serve as the design concept for the selection of fixtures, furnishings and equipment.
  • 40. CONCEPT STATEMENT Design of the Annex to the Maracaña Stadium is centered on the acronym F.I.F.A. both in honor of the client as well as the four main points met by the design. With inspiration for the design being taken from Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, and the Brazil 2014 logo, design of the annex will be flamboyant in nature. Through the use of vibrant color schemes and obvious focal points, the annex will achieve flashiness enough to excite all inhabitants about the activities that brought them there. Design of the annex required intricate thought in the space planning and layout of the interior space. The intertwining of primary office spaces used for both FIFA and the Local organizations and the curvature of the space itself involved extra consideration in space planning and appropriate adjacencies. One main consideration for the annex is function for all users. Design meets all codes and constraints for this type of space making it accessible for users of all shapes and sizes. One primary mode of achieving this access is through wayfinding systems of various types within the space. Another consideration within the space is education through the museum portions of the annex. The museums and interactive display units are used as a means of providing an academic experience in addition to the recreational purposes of the space.
