  1. As we’ve heard technology is changing the way consumers shop and purchase things.Online marketplaces, like Amazon, have set the standard for m-commerce. They have set the expectation that consumers can shop for anytime, anywhere. But this creates a challenge for grocery retailers, where physical stores still remain an important part of the business.
  2. (Ask audience) How do you prefer to shop for groceries? Search for a specific product – e.g. Cadbury Hazelnut slab Shop by category – e.g. confectionary section Browse and purchase things as they see it. Who uses a shopping list?An effective shopping app should replicate the in-store experience & be able to accommodate people’s various shopping styles. In all ways all the time.   5. Whether you are at work, home or away for the weekend, customers should be able to locate a store that is relevant to them, anywhere and at any time. Whilst the apps reviewed had store finder functionality, it was quite limited.
  6. Just like any other retail sector, customers should have the option to complete an entire grocery order from their mobile.Woolworths is the first Australian grocery retailer that offers its customer with an option to shop online through their mobile app.It is clear that Woolworths understands that “customers want options about how and when they do their fresh food and grocery shopping”However, users are redirected to an m-site from the app. It would be great to see this integrated into the app.
  7. Consumers like to be rewarded for their behaviours. Firstly, for their loyalty to the brandThis concept is plaid on in-store and should be transferrable online. Coles = ‘Flybuys’, Woolworths =‘Everyday Rewards’, whilst IGA = ‘My IGA Loyalty’. Members should be able to access loyalty points, exclusive offers, and any other extra benefits through the mobile app. Currently, Woolworths is the only one that incorporates their loyalty program into their mobile app. Secondly, for using the app.Rewarding someone for a particular behavior will increase the likelihood they would do it again. Similarly, rewarding people for using your app, will encourage them to do it again.
  8. Another features that research panel liked was recipe features:Recipe features have been a great way to engage consumers which in return increases foot traffic in-store and increasing basket size. Coles’ “Feed Your Family for Under $10” campaign was successful, but only targeted one specific customer group. Shoppers want more!An effective ‘Recipes’ feature should enable its customers to navigate according to their current needs whether it is by meal type or dietary requirement.Let’s take it one step further – mobile apps should then enable customers to order, purchase, and have this meal ingredients delivered. All you would need to do is cook dinner!
  9. Along these lines, mobile devices provide a new avenue for businesses to introduce their products or services in ways not possible in the pastSmartphone technology in particular gives marketers various interactive elements, such as camera, push notifications, NFC, GPS, QR readers. It seems none of the apps reviewed leveraged any of these interactive elements to inform their customers on new products. Push notifications, for example, can be used to introduce new products on the supermarket or when a certain item is on special. Incorporating new recipe ideas with product releases can further engage customers
