O
n May 25, 1961, John F. Kennedy announced before a special joint
session of the Congress the very ambitious goal of sending an American
to the Moon – and back to Earth – before the end of the decade.
This was by no means a small endeavour. The decision involved much
consideration as well as enormous human efforts and expenditures to bring it to
reality.
And on July 20th, 1969, sure enough two
Americans landed on the Moon.
In an unrelated story, the eCall initiative in
Europe is aimed at equipping vehicles with a
system which automatically connects to an
emergency centre in case of serious accident or
when activated manually by vehicle occupants.
The goal is to provide a voice channel and also
to notify the emergency centre of the precise location of the vehicle. This will
create the conditions for a quicker and better assistance to people involved in car
accidents, therefore reducing casualties and related costs.
The ecall initiative’s roadmap started back in 2002, with a deeper involvement of
Europe’s Member States starting 2004, through the signature of a Memorandum
of Understanding.
One decade has gone. It is fair to ask: where is eCall? Well, there is still some
doubt about the deadline for the full implementation of the pan-European eCall
mandate. October 1st 2015 is the new target. But will it hold?
Much worse than that, in my opinion, is the fact that a lot of us are asking whether
it still makes sense when so many initiatives from the private sector took off in the
meantime. Many car manufacturers are pushing ahead with their own programs
and no longer waiting for eCall. Even the technical framework on top of which
eCall was designed is outdated now.
Is this another case of too little, too late, for Europe? Hope not, but for sure
Europe really needs to pull its act together and stop dragging its heavy feet.

Case Study
Badatours is driving down operating costs with
Frotcom
Configuring arrival messages
on Routes
Travelling thousands of miles per day, the passenger transportation company
Badatours adopted Frotcom - vehicle tracking and fleet management solution to optimize fleet performance and reduce operating costs.
In Frotcom Routes’ Notifications
folder, you will find some options
which may be useful.
Badatours is a passenger transportation company, dedicated to frequent
transports (for schools and companies), weekend trips and occasional coach
service. Based in Barcelona, the company became an important regional
operator serving all Spain and Europe.
For instance, you can specify a
message to be sent to someone when
the vehicle is approaching its
destination.
Select this option when you want to
send an email or SMS message to one
or several persons, when the vehicle is
approaching its destination.
You can choose by time or distance.
To consolidate management information and reduce operating costs of its
fleet, the company was looking for an accurate and real-time monitoring fleet
management system. After reviewing the market, Badatours selected Frotcom
as the system capable of responding to their needs in a timely and flexible way.
According to Mr. Candido Teruel, CEO at Badatours, “In the past we worked
with other GPS vehicle tracking systems, but none of them can be compared to
Frotcom. Frotcom is giving us accurate information, capturing vehicle
performance and monitoring driver performance.” He also stated, “We can
closely monitor routes execution and carefully select the most direct routes,
reducing operating costs. Frotcom is a must-have to any fleet manager. The
service and support are exceptional and the solution is way ahead of many of
its competitors.”

The message will be sent by email
and/or SMS, depending on the
selection of contacts.
If your destination is a CRM Place (i.e.
your customers’ locations), you can
select the CRM contacts. This will
make it easier to select the contacts of
clients when you want to warn them
of the arrival of your vehicles.
You can also specify your Company
contacts or finally any other contacts,
in the Other contacts section.

New features
A convenient way to associate a
trailer/asset to a tractor unit (truck)
You can have Frotcom execute an action when a form is
submitted by a driver, from a Workforce Management
terminal (tablet or smartphone).
As a first example, you have a very convenient way to
associate a trailer/asset to a tractor unit (truck) through
the submission of a form. Once a driver submits a form
specifying to which trailer his/her truck has been
coupled, Frotcom will associate the new trailer and
dissociate any previous one.
Change the colour code in waypoints according to the
speed limits you set
Frotcom has added the possibility to change the colour code which represents
speed in the waypoints along a vehicle’s trail.
Frotcom associates a default set of speed intervals to the colour codes in way
points. You can now alter the default configuration and use a personalized set of
speed intervals.
Send alarm notifications or nudges to the buzzer
It is now possible to alert drivers of different occurrences, by configuring Frotcom
to send specific commands associated to different buzzing patterns for each alarm
type. Or just send a “nudge” to the drivers so they can call back, for instance.
Ten different buzzing patterns are possible to be configured.
