During Reagan's first term, he oversaw the release of 52 American hostages in Iran after 444 days of captivity. His popularity rose to over 64%. He implemented Reaganomics, which cut federal income taxes by 25% over 3 years and helped lower inflation and unemployment while creating 20 million new jobs. Reagan also undertook a large peacetime military buildup and initiated the Strategic Defense Initiative to develop missile defense technologies. However, Reagan also dealt with numerous terrorist attacks, including the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut that killed 241 American soldiers, causing him to pull troops out of Lebanon.
