Hello,
Good morning
My name is Nuno Ricardo Oliveira. I am PhD student at Universidade Aberta, Portugal – Portuguese Open University
I will present my PhD project with the titel: Personal Learning Networks as emerging environments in a researchers’ community
The present study thus seeks to contribute to the understanding of how a community of researchers builds, their personal learning network, in a useful way to their learning process. In other words, how the PLN can be the means for the researcher to disclose his identity in the network.
Researchers mark digital presence by sharing, collaboration and dissemination of their work through social networks, which are emerging and pedagogical environments that allow for sharing and interaction with other researchers.
These are the new trends of the researchers of the digital age.
The social Web has a large presence in the life of the academic community combining the informal settings with the formal.
Look at this example: how many of us,/ who are at this conference / share on social networks the work of others? For example in the twitter or facebook?
This leads to the following research question.
This main question is intended to address the following objectives:
Identify the PLN of researchers in the research community;
Identify the researchers’ digital identity;
Define how researchers identify and create the online relationships in their PLN;
Identify the structural factors that enable collaborative learning through the PLN.
This study starts with a brief comment, that is very important to the life of an academic and relates to their digital identity (DI).
The concept of Digital Identity is one of the important elements to understand the PLN of each researcher. / it is a relatively recent concept. / it derives from the action that researchers develop in their online spaces, / allowing them to build an identity that includes their presence, / as well as the learning and skills developed in a lifelong process, / at a personal, / academic and professional level (Aresta 2013).
Building a Digital Identity implies several distinct aspects: / researchers authenticate and validate their identity in the digital system, / by means of the content shared with their network through the digital means / that allows them to communicate and interact with the others; / their presence is validated through sharing and disseminating the published content; / profiles are created in the emerging social web; / and the participation of each element in the online spaces where they have a profile
The social Web is characterised by individual participation and interaction in various spaces and emerging environments by sharing, / that allows the development of a digital identity on the web.
The Personal Learning Network (PLN) is the social dimension and emerges as a relationship tool and strategy, these environments where the researcher relates to others and that by means of this relationship, feedback and interaction that may exist, there is a production of knowledge, and therefore there is a network of learning.
The PLN is the connections that the researcher establishes through the means available and at their disposal, with the purpose of improving mutual learning, through feedback, ideas, documentation, new contacts, thus building a network of learning and new knowledge.
My project right now is at the stage of preparation and application of questionnaire to researchers. After this it will be selected a representative group of researchers and an analysis of their social network will be undertaken.
the questionnaire will be applied to the research community, in order to characterise their profile and define the features of their "Digital Identity", as well as to understand its importance and influence in networked learning, study how their PLN is created.
In a second phase it proceeds to an analysis of the social network of representative group.
After this analysis will be carried out an interview to consolidate of information gathering of the analysis social networks and the questionnaire. With this data collection is intended to understand how researchers construct their Personal Learning Network.
In short, it is intended with this work to demonstrate that Learning is usually associated to a formal context and institutional platforms, but in the digital age, where there is a strong participation in the web and researchers seek to connect with experts in their field of interest, learning at an informal level can be promoted. Thus, the contribution of this study is to understand how researchers create their personal learning network (PLN).
thank you for this opportunity to share with you my work!
