Notas do Editor

  1. After we opened the new library addition in 2001 I took on my job as a Computer Trainer. As challenging and rewarding as that was it did not give me that creative outlet I needed. So I browsed the stacks in my favorite area the 745s and found a gourd book. I knew my sister had grown some gourds that year so after reading the book I asked her for some gourds to test on. What I had envisioned in my head seemed to work and I really liked the process. I was hooked! >>Show & Tell These two books
  2. This is the first gourd I created and sold from the few gourds my sister gave me to experiment with.
  3. So after my attempt at my first gourd I went searching on the Internet. I found the best gourd farm in the nation and ordered my first batch. You might ask why I went searching out of KS for gourds. I quickly found out there is a big difference in the gourds we grow here and the gourds grown in a warmer climate. A longer growing season makes a world of difference. The shells are thicker, the surface is less porous and much easier to burn on and takes the stains much better. > Show & Tell the difference in thickness > two tops
  4. I love getting a box of moldy dirty gourds and washing and scrubbing to uncover the jewel beneath. So don’t throw those gourds away when they start to get moldy. That’s when they are just starting to get ready work away that out skin. So the moldier the easier they are to clean. > Show & Tell The three stages
  5. I’ve tried growing gourds and I just don’t have the right place yet. And with our shorter growing season you’ll mostly be able to grow a good bird house gourd here in KS. >Show & TellHandout has some how-tos on growing.Biggest advice if you are going to grow them:Don’t’ pick too soon. Make sure the stem is brown. Don’t let them freeze.Don’t throw it away when it gets moldy. That moldis starting to eat the outer skin off and it will be much easier to clean. Let them dry slowly until you can hear seeds rattle when you pick up the gourd and shake it.Have patience they’ll be ready the next season for gourd art. Don’t get disappointed when your favorite one doesn’t make it. >Show & TellDinky Gourd I grew
  6. Inspiration: This is my favorite gourd book and my favorite gourd artist.Dyan Mai Peterson. I get inspired every time I look through her book. I wish she’d write another one real soon. >Show & TellDyan’s Book
  7. Inspired by Peterson’s gourd here only I chose a dragonfly motif instead of a horse and added some raffia beads to the top.
  8. I’ve tried drawing fish for years. I think I’ve finally got it.
  9. She’s also featured in this new book along with some Kansas Gourd Artists. I was inspired to try some gold leaf after looking at this book.
  10. Gourds come in many shapes. >Show & TellThis chart is in your handout.
