Sydney
Ask any backpacker and they’ll tell you what a black hole Sydney can be.
A black hole that sucks you in with its too-easy lifestyle, work (money)
opportunities and scariest of all, its bloody unreal party scene. Before
you know what’s hit you, six months of your life will have flown by in the
opening of a goon.
But it’s not all bad news. Sydney is one of the most magnificent and
entertaining cities in the world and to be honest, you just need to ‘get in
amongst it and go for it’!
The City
It’s easy to find your way around this grid-mapped City, so walk it and lap up
the hustle and bustle Sydney-style.

The trip with Mojosurf started early on Monday morning and thinking
I’d be picked up in a rickety old bus I was surprised to see a pimped
out black and pink luxury coach pull up. Our guide and all round good
dude, jumped out of the bus all smiles and full of excitement. After
introducing himself and shaking hands with everyone, loading all the
bags and clearly establishing himself as a part time comedian, we
were off to Crescent Head, about 5 hours north of Sydney.
Pulling into Crescent Head is like driving into your own personal
paradise. Located on the mid north coast of NSW, this little gem is
truly a sight to see and we were staying at Mojosurf’s custom built
surf camp, directly across from an amazing beach in the middle of
nowhere. Awesome.
We unpacked and met the rest of the crew who were all genuinely
“stoked” to see us and from there the best week of my travels started.
We got right into the surfing, starting with a thorough but really funny
surf safety talk that went over everything from rips and currents to
the proper use and application of Vaseline (I can’t explain). We were
then all given wetsuits and headed down to the beach for the rest of
our lesson.
The instructors were great, patient, informative, and able to
break down the process of standing on a board so everyone could
understand no matter what language they spoke. From there it was
straight into the water for our first attempts at riding waves. Starting
in about waist deep water the instructors pushed us one by one onto
waves, hooting and yelling encouragement as we all gave it a go.
Within 30 minutes pretty much everyone was consistently catching
and riding waves. It’s one of coolest feelings to catch and ride your
own wave. About an hour into our first lesson I was “out the back”
trying to catch the big ones. I soon found myself back with the rest
of the group, tail between my legs but “stoked” none the less. The
challenge had been set and I promised myself I’d be riding the big
waves by the end of the week.
Two hours later and feeling F@*ked (so was pretty much everyone
else), we packed up shop and headed back to the camp where cold
beers, a campfire, and an unbelievable dinner was waiting for us. We
drank, we ate, and then we partied the night away. It was such a good
day and we still had four more to go.
Throughout the rest of the week, we did much of the same; long days
in the sun, surf and sand, followed by partying nights around the
campfire. On the Wednesday we headed north to Spot X, Mojosurf’s
‘super camp’, that was just as amazing as Crescent, but had other
beginner surfers which was cool cause everyone just mixed in with
each other swapping surf stories.
Mojo Surf
by Tim Herbst, New York USA
By the end of the week the entire group was “out the back” catching
and riding their own waves like real surfers, and yes that even
included me. We’d spent countless hours on the beach laughing and
surfing, four nights hanging out and getting to know one another, and
generally having an unreal time surfing our way up the coast. We
coming off the plane to Australia, I had no idea what to expect. All I ended the trip in Byron Bay and we all went out to celebrate a brilliant
knew (and cared about) was that in two days, I would embark on a 5 week. Looking back I can definitely say this was the best experience
day surf trip up the East coast, from Sydney to Byron Bay with some of my time in Oz. As for surfing itself, you can’t describe how cool the
company called Mojosurf. I was going in with no surf experience, none experience is. You’ve just got to get out there and find your Mojo, “the
of my mates and no tan. looking back, I wouldn’t have wanted to start in best surfer in the world is the one having the most fun”.
Australia any other way...
From the moment I booked my plane ticket I knew that I wanted to learn how
to surf. To me, there wouldn’t be any better way to experience the iconic
lifestyle of an Aussie surfer than spending an entire week living like one. I
didn’t know I’d end up at remote surf camps on some of the most beautiful
coastline I’d ever seen.
