In the last few years, neural representation learning approaches have achieved very good performance on many natural language processing (NLP) tasks, such as language modelling and machine translation. This suggests that neural models may also yield significant performance improvements on information retrieval (IR) tasks, such as relevance ranking, addressing the query-document vocabulary mismatch problem by using semantic rather than lexical matching. IR tasks, however, are fundamentally different from NLP tasks leading to new challenges and opportunities for existing neural representation learning approaches for text. In this talk, I will present my recent work on neural IR models. We begin with a discussion on learning good representations of text for retrieval. I will present visual intuitions about how different embeddings spaces capture different relationships between items, and their usefulness to different types of IR tasks. The second part of this talk is focused on the applications of deep neural architectures to the document ranking task.

Models such as latent semantic analysis and those based on neural embeddings learn distributed representations of text, and match the query against the document in the latent semantic space. In traditional information retrieval models, on the other hand, terms have discrete or local representations, and the relevance of a document is determined by the exact matches of query terms in the body text. We hypothesize that matching with distributed representations complements matching with traditional local representations, and that a combination of the two is favourable. We propose a novel document ranking model composed of two separate deep neural networks, one that matches the query and the document using a local representation, and another that matches the query and the document using learned distributed representations. The two networks are jointly trained as part of a single neural network. We show that this combination or ‘duet’ performs significantly better than either neural network individually on a Web page ranking task, and significantly outperforms traditional baselines and other recently proposed models based on neural networks.

ABSTRACT In this paper we propose a novel method to cluster categorical data while retaining their context. Typically, clustering is performed on numerical data. However it is often useful to cluster categorical data as well, especially when dealing with data in real-world contexts. Several methods exist which can cluster categorical data, but our approach is unique in that we use recent text-processing and machine learning advancements like GloVe and t- SNE to develop a a context-aware clustering approach (using pre-trained word embeddings). We encode words or categorical data into numerical, context-aware, vectors that we use to cluster the data points using common clustering algorithms like K-means.

Resource constraints of the nodes make security protocols difficult to implement. Thus key management is an important area of research in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Key predistribution (kpd) which involves preloading keys in sensor nodes, has been considered as the best solution for key management when sensor nodes are battery powered and have to work unattended. This paper proposes a method to fix some loophole in an existing key predistribution scheme thereby enhancing the security of messages exchanged within a WSN. Here we use a model based on Reed Muller Codes to establish connectivity keys between sensor nodes. The model is then utilized to securely establish communication keys and exchange messages in a WSN designed on basis of two schemes using transversal designs for key predistribution. The combination of the key predistribution scheme and the connectivity model gives rise to highly resilient communication model with same connectivity between nodes as the chosen key predistribution scheme.

In this paper, we have encrypted a text to an array of data bits through arithmetic coding technique. For this, we have assigned a unique range for both, a number of characters and groups using those. Using unique range we may assign range only 10 characters. If we want to encrypt a large number of characters, then every character has to assign a range with their group range of hundred, thousand and so on. Long textual message which have to encrypt, is subdivided into a number of groups with few characters. Then the group of characters is encrypted into floating point numbers concurrently to their group range by using arithmetic coding, where they are automatically compressed. Depending on key, the data bits from text are placed to some suitable nonlinear pixel and bit positions about the image. In the proposed technique, the key length and the number of characters for any encryption process is both variable

A Large number of digital text information is gener ated every day. Effectively searching, managing and exploring the text data has become a m ain task. In this paper, we first represent an introduction to text mining and a probabilistic topic model Latent Dirichlet allocation. Then two experiments are proposed - Wikipedia articles a nd users’ tweets topic modelling. The former one builds up a document topic model, aiming to a topic perspective solution on searching, exploring and recommending articles. The latter one sets up a user topic model, providing a full research and analysis over Twitter users’ interest. The experiment process including data collecting, data pre-processing and model training is fully documented and commented. Further more, the conclusion and applica tion of this paper could be a useful computation tool for social and business research.

Entity linking involves labeling phrases in text with their referent entities, such as Wikipedia or Freebase entries. This task is challenging due to the large number of possible entities, in the millions, and heavy-tailed mention ambiguity. We formulate the problem in terms of probabilistic inference within a topic model, where each topic is associated with a Wikipedia article. To deal with the large number of topics we propose a novel efficient Gibbs sampling scheme which can also incorporate side information, such as the Wikipedia graph. This conceptually simple probabilistic approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in entity-linking on the Aida-CoNLL dataset.

With the emergence of XML as de facto format for storing and exchanging information over the Internet, the search for ever more innovative and effective techniques for their querying is a major and current concern of the XML database community. Several studies carried out to help solve this problem are mostly oriented towards the evaluation of so-called exact queries which, unfortunately, are likely (especially in the case of semi-structured documents) to yield abundant results (in the case of vague queries) or empty results (in the case of very precise queries). From the observation that users who make requests are not necessarily interested in all possible solutions, but rather in those that are closest to their needs, an important field of research has been opened on the evaluation of preferences queries. In this paper, we propose an approach for the evaluation of such queries, in case the preferences concern the structure of the document. The solution investigated revolves around the proposal of an evaluation plan in three phases: rewriting-evaluation-merge. The rewriting phase makes it possible to obtain, from a partitioningtransformation operation of the initial query, a hierarchical set of preferences path queries which are holistically evaluated in the second phase by an instrumented version of the algorithm TwigStack. The merge phase is the synthesis of the best results.
