2. Tampa is a city in the State of Florida and it is the county seat for
Hillsborough County. It is situated on the west coast of Florida, on
the Gulf of Mexico. Although Tampa was first discovered by
Spanish explorers in the 1500s, it had been inhabited for
thousands of years by Native Americans. During that time, the
Safety Harbor culture of the Tocobaga and Pohoy tribes was very
much dominant.
The earliest explorations in the area were led by Panfilo de
Narvaez and Hernando De Soto and back then they were looking
for gold and areas where a colony can be established. Seeing
that the local riches were only fish and shellfish, they did not stay
in the region. Also, the indigenous peoples living in the area
repulsed any attempt to build a Spanish mission there. Even
though the natives were able to fight off Spanish colonizers, they
were not impervious to disease. Smallpox and other diseases
introduced by European contact decimated the native population
to the point that the Tampa Bay area was virtually uninhabited for
the next 200 years.
The area was repopulated by Cubans
and Native American fishermen by
the mid-18th century. In 1821, the
United States signed the Adams-Onis
treaty with Spain which sold the area
of Florida to the former. By 1824, the
US Army set up a frontier outpost
called Fort Brooke near the
Hillsborough River. Pioneers built homes close to the fort for
defense against the Seminole population. This settlement
eventually grew into a small town. The town grew rapidly around
the 1880s and this is largely due to creation of railroad lines which
connected central Florida to the Tampa Bay, discovery of
phosphate mines, and the growth of its cigar industry.

3. These breakthroughs transformed the once-struggling town of
Tampa into a bustling one and by the 1900s it had grown into one
of the biggest cities in the State. Tampa saw a marked increase in
population during the 1950s and 1960s, and this spurred major
expansion in infrastructure which supported both commerce and
tourism. Today, Tampa city is a melting pot of many cultures but
with a very palpable Latino character. Tampa is now regarded as
an emerging global city. In recent years, the city experienced a
noticeable upsurge in high-market demand from consumers,
which shows more wealth concentrated in Tampa.
