2. What did people do long time ago before rulers, tape measures, metre sticks, ...etc?

Also, a FATHOM, which used to be used to measure the depth of water from a boat
was a stone attached to a piece of rope. It was thrown into the water and slowly
measured by lengths of someone's outstretched arms as it came out. It is now
standardized as 6 FEET.
