3. Tata DoCoMo launches 3G
services (3rd Nov, 2010)
Tata Teleservices, which has Japanese firm DoCoMo
as partner, launched 3G mobile services in nine
circles, enabling subscribers to access high speed
Internet and video telephony
Tata DoCoMo became the first private telecom firm to
launch 3G mobile services in the country. Two state
owned firms -- BSNL and MTNL -- had launched the
services more than a year ago
Tatas had bagged 3G spectrum in nine circles of
Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh (including
Chhatisgarh), Rajasthan, Gujarat, UP (West), Punjab,
Haryana and Maharashtra in the auction held recently
Going forward, NTT DoCoMo will continue to leverage
its mobile expertise and value-added services in
markets worldwide through collaboration with partners
such as TTSL
4. EU issues note to address drug
seizure concerns of India
The European Union has offered fresh suggestions to
prevent wrongful confiscation of Indian generic drugs
during transit through European countries, a move that
hints at its seriousness about settling the issue.
The 27-member block has offered a non-binding proposal,
or a non-paper in technical terms, that seeks to address
India’s concerns.
India may ask for setting up of a dispute settlement panel
at the WTO to settle the long-pending issue to make sure
that the offer made by the EU has sufficient backing of the
law.
Many of India’s drugs shipments to the third world
countries through ports in Europe have been seized
because of over-interpretation of regulations by Customs
authorities in European countries.
5. India expects progress on US
export control issue
Ahead of President Barack Obama's visit in India it is
expected that there will be progress on the issue of
relaxation of US export control regime on dual-use
items.
Under the export control regime, the US has a list of
entities which whose export to certain countries like
India requires clearances.
These technologies fall under the categories 'non-
proliferation, national security, missile technologies
and crime control' by the US administration.
India wants such items to be allowed to be transferred
without the requirement of clearances.
