The War of 1812 had several causes, including British attacks on American merchant ships and impressment of US sailors into the British navy. The US passed various trade embargos against Britain in response. Supporters of the war, called War Hawks, were from the South and West and hoped war would enable expansion. The war ended in 1814 under the Treaty of Ghent, which restored the pre-war status quo. The war weakened the Federalist party and inspired the writing of "The Star Spangled Banner."
