Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by a genetic mutation on chromosome 7 that results in a defective protein that regulates salt and water transport in epithelial cells. It causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system, leading to infections and impaired organ function. It is treated with therapies to clear mucus from the lungs and antibiotics to treat infections, but currently has no cure. It affects approximately 30,000 individuals in the United States, predominantly Caucasians.
